From an operational efficiency standpoint, I remember reading a very good article which explains a simple rule of thumb to measure CFOs performance. 1/ CFO should at least pay for him/herself in year 1: which means the ROI from a CFO should be to at least recover the remuneration. This can be by way of various optimization exercise from different dimensions of finance. 2/ Post which based on which the management can have a blended short-medium-term and long-term to create a right balance to immediate realization of returns and marginal improvements which benefit the organization in a long-term.

I imagine you can all list 3 or 4 candidates and there's a ton of opinions you've read or heard. Now ask yourself, who do you consider the greatest CFO? Even most finance professionals probably couldn't come up with one. Shouldn't we know? I suspect we don't because we probably should measure CFO performance on the company's financial performance, but generally that is how we measure CEOs. You imagine some sort of rating from investors or their agents would be critical too. I am not sure this exists. I would argue that we haven't really come up with a good answer to this question, and we need to.
