What are the most effective ways to evaluate assessment methods for students in rural areas?

Having spent a few years involved in a South African rural school setting, this point is crucial! In a rural school, your objectives are sometimes mixed with other socioeconomic factors e.g. ensuring that children are safe and aren’t hungry. Even in the most sparse setting, good education is possible but it would be advised not to bring those objectives from “equipped” school into this rural setting. Know what is important for this community & don’t be swayed by outside pressures.

Few of the apparent challenges in the education process in rural areas of countries like Pakistan are availability of one room schools with only one teacher for students from pre-primary to upper primary each class having more than 10 children to be taught with three subjects. This all comes with incomplete furniture, outdated lengthy textbooks, no electricity and other teaching aids. The teachers are not much trained or with least of the vision/interest due to those issues and more probably least salary across the department. It becomes highly difficult to assess the students on any specific standards.

If we are considering actual rural areas in developing countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and many countries in Africa, these students and even teachers probably have very limited access to technology. Therefore it may not be the most practical to use technology since this is one of the biggest barriers the students and educators face. Instead, one on One interaction with students should be done to understand not only their skill levels in the assessment but also the environment in which they may be facing these assessments. Without having insights into the actual learning environment the results of the assessments may be misleading and biased because each rural area and school will have their own unique challenges.

Although there is a general effort made to try bring technology to rural communities - it will most likely not be your “go to” means for assessment. I would like think that focusing on the uncluttering of basic skills of literacy and numeracy is crucial so that individual assessment is simple enough to capture.

First, embrace flexible assessment formats to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities in rural areas. Consider alternatives like project-based assessments or oral presentations, allowing students to demonstrate understanding in varied ways. Second, ensure access to assessment resources by leveraging technology judiciously. Optimize online platforms for simplicity and reliability, considering the potential limitations in rural connectivity. Applying these considerations aligns with Universal Design for Learning, promoting inclusivity in assessments for all students.

You may find that the students you are teaching are first generation upper grade students - their parents may have little or basic education. Parental support still remains an important aspect in education but these aspects would need to be considered when you are reflecting on your assessment effectiveness.

Avoid high-,stakes intensive tests and instead set group project work. Ensure at the start that their are key objectives that students must show (as a whole group) to earn their grade. Ensure oral (spoken) answers and knowledge shown are just as important as written work. Some students can much better demonstrate their understanding this way. Plus, the teachers save time by grading the project, rather than individually.

Instead of using assessments as the primary tool, it can be a secondary tool where observations and a project-based learning task can be used where all students can participate equally. The input of the educators in the specific areas can be critical in forming such a task to ensure that all factors are taken into consideration. It is a commonly known fact that when facing summative or formative students in rural areas often face a disadvantage due to the massive irregularities in access to resources and even the learning and home environments. Considering this a more hands-on assessment method such as observation will provide better insights into their actual skills, their limitations and their challenges.
