Don't stress too much about the numbers game of likes and shares; it's the message that counts. Respect the fact that people come from all walks of life with different viewpoints, and engage in conversations with an open heart.

Not only do you need to define your objectives within your marketing/communications team, but the entire organization also needs to know them. From the C-Suite to Business Development, everyone needs to have some common knowledge of how social media plays in to the larger corporate strategy. If your strategy is to educate and drive traffic to the website, but your sales leaders are expecting direct leads, you have a problem.

First things first, you gotta know your audience. I'm talking about getting into the nitty-gritty of what they like, dislike, and what problems they're trying to solve. Your content needs to be a blend of what you want to say and what they want to hear. So, think educational content, how-tos, industry insights, and maybe even some light-hearted humor or storytelling to keep things engaging.

To excel in social media, start with clear objectives. Define your goals: brand awareness, lead generation, website traffic, or sales. Measure success with metrics like engagement, clicks, and conversions. Align your strategy with these objectives for effective social media marketing.

PSA: You don't need to be on every social media platform. I would argue that you should focus on dominating 2-3 platforms before spreading yourself too thin. A lot of social media teams aren't staffed correctly, so knowing which platforms you need to be on and focusing on those is the best approach. For many B2B companies they are struggling with TikTok, but do they need to be there? Make sure you use your time and energy wisely on platforms you will see a return on.

LinkedIn, Medium, and Quora are the go-to platforms if you're looking to flex your intellectual muscles. They're perfect for thought leadership and in-depth content. This is particularly useful for B2B companies or professional service providers. You can share industry reports, white papers, or even a good old-fashioned opinion piece

Choosing "the right" platform is crucial. LinkedIn is my go-to platform for professional and business-focused engagement. Its unique environment is perfect for establishing authority and sharing valuable insights. For my objectives, it outshines other platforms like Instagram or YouTube. LinkedIn's data-driven tools are invaluable for analyzing competitors and identifying high-engagement areas.

Get to know the strengths and weaknesses of various social media platforms. Most importantly, understand where exactly your audience prefers to hang out on a daily basis. For example, for B2B folks that would be: 1. LinkedIn - Best for B2B networking and professional content 2. Facebook - A versatile platform suitable for a wide range of audiences and content types. For B2C brands a must-have platform is 1. Instagram - Ideal for visual content and reaching a younger audience Or, if you are in a Blockchain space you would find your audience on 1. Twitter - Perfect platform for the fast-paced crypto environment 2. Reddit - This is where deeper conversations happen

Not all platforms are cut from the same cloth, and there's no need to spread yourself thin across all of them. Depending on your specific goals, target audience, and industry, certain platforms may offer a more fitting and impactful presence. For instance, if your aim is to visually showcase products or services, platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, or YouTube could be your focus. On the other hand, if you seek to establish your authority and share valuable insights, platforms such as LinkedIn, Medium, or Quora may be your go-to choices. Leverage tools like BuzzSumo or Sprout Social to scrutinize your competitors and pinpoint where they garner the most engagement and results, aiding your strategic platform selection.

I use third-party apps like Canva, InShot, and CapCut to make quick video content and highly recommend all three. BUT - Don't add all the text for your video with these apps! Instead, add the most important text within the Reels/Shorts/TikTok native upload. The platforms use this text to help figure out what your content is about so they can put it in front of the right audience. And of course, use a hook in the first line of your caption and add appropriate hashtags.

In the realm of social media marketing, content reigns supreme. Crafting and curating content that resonates with your audience is paramount. AI tools like Canva, Microsoft Clipchamp, and Lexica empower me to create visually captivating graphics and videos. When curating, I turn to LinkedIn and Forbes to unearth valuable content from diverse sources. To streamline my efforts, I rely on scheduling tools like RADAAR and Buffer, ensuring optimal posting times and consistency in content delivery.

I learned from a B-school communications professor that there are 4 ways to create useful and valuable content that my connections any social medium want to read: 1) tell them what I want them to KNOW that they don’t quite know yet 2) tell them what I want them to BELIEVE that they don’t believe yet 3) tell them what I want them to FEEL for the experience 4) tell them what I want them to DO as a result. In other words, they will not do anything in your call-to-action unless they know, believe, and feel you are offering them value and a unique perspective. This is an ongoing effort, to earn and retain their trust in you as a subject matter expert. A tall calling, but it will set you above the competition if you pursue it expeditiously.

Streamline your content management process with tools like CoSchedule, Buffer, or Hootsuite, allowing you to plan and schedule your content in advance, while also optimizing your posting frequency and timing for maximum impact.

For instance, Google News is an excellent resource for finding articles and news stories with relevant keywords. Keeping an eye on brand mentions? Google Alerts has got you covered. Newsletters that send the latest news and updates can be a lifesaver. Plus, Pocket is an excellent tool for saving content to share with your audience later. Some social media software tools have curated feeds built in. There are so many options out there. Pro tip: Bookmark excellent sources to curate content from once you've found them for future reference!
