It is also very important that these leaders get both preclinical and clinical exposure. These kinds of talents are hard to find since often scientists tend to work in their defined areas of expertise, either due to the organizational structure or the educational background. Furthermore, this kind of cross disciplinary experience requires the willingness of the leaders to challenge themselves beyond their comfort zone.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach here. It really depends on the individual and their unique strengths. Translational research needs collaboration of a diverse group with people who are excited about patients sample analysis, deep disease biology mechanics understanding and in-depth data analysis. Recently, AI/ML has been further applied to translational research and special training are required for this type of skills. Translational researchers can be trained through working on a project leveraging each other’s expertise and driving innovation simultaneously through reading and thinking, and exploring.

The third step is to create opportunities and incentives that can motivate and reward the potential leaders for engaging in translational research. You can facilitate their access to funding sources, partners, resources, and platforms that can enable and enhance their translational research projects.
