Well there are various ways. One must obviously prove himself as an engineer and come up with cost effective solutions which are based on the architectural and client requirements. Fundamental engineering principles such as robustness, continuity and clear load paths are a must. The second part is one's character where a person must be a team player and help and mentor younger engineers with the aim of producing a better solution collectively.
