What are the most effective ways to create a syllabus for Higher Education?

If you have a high proportion of first-generation students and teach an intro course, they may not even know what a syllabus is, and how you write and talk about your syllabus should take that into account. Students aren't your only audience though. Generally, when writing a syllabus, you are trying to (a) give guidance to your students about what to expect and how to behave, and (b) lay out the policies that you will cling to when students don't behave appropriately. It should be a document that guides but that you can also reference in an email to answer a question or rely on in a disciplinary proceeding.

The first step is to define the learning outcomes you want students to achieve by the end of the course and consider the background knowledge and learning styles of your students when designing the syllabus. It is crucial to ensure the syllabus adheres to any departmental or university-wide guidelines for syllabus format and content. It is a must to include basic information like the course title, instructor details, meeting times and location, credit hours, and office hours. Provide a concise overview of the course content, themes, and learning objectives. List all required textbooks, readings, online resources, and any software or equipment needed for the course. Make the syllabus accessible: clear fonts, images, add something unique. I typically always use a banner with a line like "Welcome to [course name] with Professor [Name]." After this, I tend to include a quote about education or a positive affirmation. Another recommendation, one I have learned form previous colleagues, is using feedback snippets from students. Highlight a section that use direct quotes from previous students that took the course and what they learned. Share other's experiences which can give an overview on what your current students might learn or take away that previous students did.

It is important to ensure that the syllabus and course materials are accessible to all students, including those with disabilities or diverse learning needs. Consider providing alternative formats, accommodations, or resources to support student learning and inclusion.
