Actually disagree with less than 10 categories. Pie is good to used when we have at most 5 categories if you really want to get clear meaning and pictures of your data insights.

I agree that 5 categories maximum is a good guide. The exception may be if you're trying to show that one or two categories vastly outweigh any remaining categories, in which case being able to see the many smaller segments clearly is not necessary and may even prove the point.
