If we take the basic shapes- Square, Triangle and Circle, square feels more static, rigid and solid. Triangle can either have one or three directions, and it feels most stable (when parallel to a horizontal line.) Then there is circle, that has no direction, and mostly static but can mean dynamic as well based on the composition. We can use these directions alone to create focus. Alignment and position is probably one of the earliest design element that we start practicing unconsciously. What is the first thing we do to create hierarchy? To prioritize something over another? From making list to making images, we use position often to focus something. For example, we keep the most important item in a todo list at the very top, similarly in design we tend to keep text or any important visual element at upper part of the canvas. Don't forget the power of center, which is also very common. To use alignment on the other hand, we can align multiple shapes in a chaotic/scattered environment to create focus in the overall composition/environment. In my experience as a Graphic Designer it is important to focus on the message being conveyed and the audience. The message can be lost with too much emphasis on color and visual manipulation. Granted the comments posted have merit. But if they overpower what the message is and at the same time not regard who are you trying to get the message too, all will be lost. Focus on the message while incorporating typography, color and "white" space. Create a design that will have visual impact to draw the audience in to get the message.
