I respectfully disagree with this emphasis on "fun and fresh". Recognition is profoundly important to a company culture. It can reinforce positive or negative aspects of culture and have a quick and significant effect. I believe it's better for recognition rituals to feel important, not fun. Some rituals can be both, like wedding celebrations. But even in a wedding, the profound importance of 2 people choosing each other is much more important than the fun of the celebration. I would first make sure that the ritual of recognition feels important in your company culture. If it can also then be fun, great. But fun is not the main point.

The key to any employee recognition program is to make it personal. You might feel like you're doing a great thing by praising someone in front of the whole team but if the way they feel appreciated isn't praise, then you've missed the mark. The point of this type of program isn't to have one and make leadership feel better about themselves but to help the employees feel better. This can only be done when we understand who they are, what they need, and how we can make them feel appreciated and recognized.
