In my experience, one should never ask about possible reactions by the audience, this shifts the whole discussion in uncertain speculations. At the end of the day, those have little to do with the true intentions of the director. The best open-ended question to ask is about the core of his/her interest in the specific play or project.

I support all the strategies suggested and advised while in communication with a director of a team of group. Being frank, candid, sincere are some of the team members' skillset. Remaining keenly attentive to the director's viewpoints are needed and confrontational tactics should be avoided while presenting ideas, statistics and facts to a team director who may need more time and ease to accommodate these alternative suggestions. While presenting different viewpoints on assignments and tasks, first passionately the team member should listen what the director's opinion and plan on this and if needed, gently request the director to clarify some of the entangled issues and then the member can reverentially present his/her implementable ideas.

Keep the line of communication open. Remind the director that a vision needs to be understood by any players who are participating in a production (cast, designers, crew). Offer to provide some of your time to act as a sound board if they're open to that. It's important to remember that a director is also human and may need support to fully build the vision.
