What are the most effective ways to build user experience research skills?

Four pillars to being a a more insightful and impactful researcher in a business setting: 1. A deep understanding of the business 2. Inherent curiosity coupled with good listening and observation skills 3. A natural ability to make connections between disparate datapoints 4. An ability to separate the general from the specific and the nice to know from the need to know information, and being able to communicate it efficiently

1. Find a mentor and shadow them. Watch how they interact with users, create artifacts,question their thinking,methodology and absorb it all especially the nuanced aspects like how to steer a conversation during an interview or how to create rapport with users. 2. Understand the basics first. Understand the different steps in research, understand why a method is best suited for a particular project and how to choose, understand the different ways to analyze and code data. 3. Practice - All those steps are moot if you don't eventually talk to a user. Start small,practice with friends and family to evaluate how you performed, the data you collected, the time constraints. Record the sessions and re-watch them and see yourself grow.

The exchange of ideas and experience is a must in order for continuous improvement in skillsets and understanding. -Joining a community helps build your network, a great place to connect with professionals and enthusiasts. -Use your time and skillset for volunteering and organizing events -Share your knowledge through posting blogs, articles, insights - Mentor or Seek Mentorship -Collaborate on open projects, case studies -Engage in discussions

It's not always necessary to wait for stakeholders to bring a research project or an initial problem statement, and you can use self-directed research to anticipate for formative research that could very well inform later projects. You can easily do this by beginning with a heuristic analyses of existing products or processes to build a case for why some research should be done. The benefit of this is that you will entirely own the project and you can use the insights to inform teams and greatly lessen the empathy gap. And, less tighter deadlines. And if you don't already have a team, make a project up! You can use ideas from tasks in interviews or understanding a user base of a (a product) and apply them to a various scenarios.

We learn from mistakes and its important to have someone to point those mistakes. Feedback from professionals are precious and they will help groom your skills as a UX researcher. - These feedback should not only come from Research mentor but also from professional related to other facets of design. for eg. Product , UX/UI designer and even Design engineers , because every individual who understands design know the importance of Research. - Be vocal on what you want to convey and involve in interactive presentation of your research work. - Keep a note of improvements, feedback and suggestions if time permits.
