1 Define creativity criteria

Before you start assessing creativity, you need to have a clear idea of what it means for your specific PBL project. Creativity can be defined in different ways, depending on the context, the discipline, and the purpose of the project. Some common aspects of creativity are originality, relevance, fluency, flexibility, and elaboration. You can use these aspects as a basis for creating your own creativity criteria, or adapt them to suit your project goals and expectations. For example, you can use a rubric, a checklist, or a rating scale to define and communicate the criteria to your students.

In English 11 (Unit - American Identity), we were studying poetry written during the Harlem Renaissance, and by immigrants who struggled with assimilation and other similarly provocative topics about struggling in America. We broke down the poetry, read about the poets and discussed what "American" means to different individuals/groups. The project I assigned required students to re-interpret the American flag. I showed many examples (Pride etc). Students were provided with art supplies and instructed to interpret this assignment as broadly as possible. Some painted, some did collage, some used technology to produce digital flags. The most moving was a girl who painted stars/stripes on a clear glass vase then cracked it with a hammer.

Reflection helps in developing greater self awareness. With greater self awareness, one’s world view also expands. A litmus test is whether a unique POV is developed so that it is not always a “me-too” perspective.

5 Involve students in co-creating the assessment

Finally, one of the best ways to assess creativity in PBL projects is to involve your students in co-creating the assessment with you. Co-creating the assessment means that you and your students collaborate and negotiate on the design, implementation, and evaluation of the assessment. For example, you can ask your students to help you define the creativity criteria, choose the sources of evidence, provide feedback to each other, and reflect on their own and others' creativity. By involving your students in co-creating the assessment, you can increase their engagement, ownership, and autonomy in their creative learning.
