1 Recognize the signs

Recognizing the signs of a suspicious email or website is the first step to handling a phishing attack. Common indicators include spelling and grammar errors, mismatched sender name and email address, urgent or threatening tone, requests for personal or financial information, unfamiliar or spoofed links or attachments, and generic or impersonal greeting. If you spot any of these signs, do not click on any links or attachments, nor reply to the sender. Instead, report the email to your IT department or security team immediately.

Phishing techniques might have advanced tremendously over the years with technology, however, the weaknesses remain pretty much the same. The greatest way to curb phishing is to educate employees within your organization on what it is? how it works? How to spot it? and it's overall impact. It's not enough to just build up resilient cyber security systems to detect and prevent phising attacks. As sophisticated as operational and system security is today, we as humans will almost always be the predominant single source of weakness for phishing attacks. Conducting adequate phising security training and simulations for executives and employees in an organization periodically, significantly diminishes the risk carried by this threat.

5 Respond and recover

The fifth step to handle a phishing attack is to respond and recover if you or someone else in your network has been compromised. This can be done by quickly disconnecting your device from the network and scanning it for malware, changing your passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication, contacting relevant entities to alert them of any fraudulent transactions, reporting the phishing attack to the appropriate authorities, and reviewing your network security policies and procedures.
