What is the most effective way to determine your animation project budget?

Strong, clear storyboards are essential in figuring out the scope of a project. Even while storyboarding you can make choices that are more cost effective such as avoiding unnecessary FX heavy shots, crowds scenes, etc. you know what’s essential to the story by getting your boards up on reels as much as possible to see what your story needs the most. Be prepared to “kill your darlings” - those ideas you love but don’t REALLY need to be there- and don’t worry your “thought babies” will creep back in another day ;) lol

Wow.....what is a confusing aspect of animation ? In my opinion it seems like an impossible thing to accurately guess without an approved storyboard and designs done ahead of time. How informed can any building contractor really be without a set of blueprints ? If a client , an investor and a builder all want to see a "really nice" house , they all have different expectations on what that means when there is no blueprint. I've worked on movies with a stated budget of $65 million get started in production only to finally learn that the real budget is well under $5 million. I've also been told that any movie I pitch has to have a budget of under $10 million or I won't have a hope of finding investors . I would suggest careful research

I agree. It’s also important to know when the project is to be delivered and formulate a schedule to match a realistic final script delivery to final picture delivery.

It’s easy to undervalue your expertise and get swayed by comments like “I can get this done cheaper on Fiverr.” Creating exceptional animation requires assembling a skilled team and devoting significant time to each project. The more you push for realism, the heavier the cost, but there are still ways to reduce cost. Plan on reuse and shared animation between characters. Lean on procedural systems to provide variance. Make sure your animation team work closely with game designers during pre-production phase to avoid costly rework

I would suggest to study the client also. Because for a same project budget could be differ with clients. If the client is direct or they are a middle person. Some studies just pick projects from bigger studies and supply to artist by keeping some amount inbetween.

PRIORITIZE! After that, work from big to small. Sounds easier than it is. Every project needs a customized plan based on its priorities. “What is it that this is intended to do?” Entertain? Educate? Fulfill a client’s mandate? All three? In what order? If more productions figured these things out BEFORE jumping in, they wouldn’t find themselves scrambling to meet deadlines and going over budgets. Of course, “figuring out” is a skill all its own that few people have. Which is why my free advice ends here.
