I've found that effective speechwriting is an art, much like composing music. To craft a truly impactful speech, identify your "genre," or the tone and style that best suits your audience and occasion. Create a rhythmic flow in your speech, allowing your words to resonate and engage your listeners. As a musician experiments with lyrics, don't be afraid to refine your message until it's pitch-perfect. Finally, aim to create a memorable and "catchy tune" within your speech, leaving your audience with a lasting impression or a key takeaway. Start by answering these questions: 1) What is the main point of my speech? What outcomes do I expect delivering it? 2) Who is my audience? What are their demographics, interests, and needs? 3) How will I deliver it ( a large auditorium, a small group in a meeting room, a webinar, etc)? Answering those will help you tailor your speech accordingly.

Giving the speech a punchy introduction is great but ending it memorably with a clear call to action is even greater. The end is usually what an audience remembers most vividly. Make it memorable!

Organize your speech with a clear structure, typically consisting of an introduction, body, and conclusion. Use signposts and transitions to guide the audience through your ideas.

That is all true but the more simple that you can make your statement on your missions goals and how you plan on achieving them is most important. I believe in the KISS methodology so you don't lose people in your description and I have been guilty in that, as well. When somebody comes in and talks me after my speech I find it very gratifying when they say I'm going to be changing my contribution to your charity this year. Yeah you can get in really bogged down with a lot of facts and figures and yeah simple sentences familiar words are important with your speech so it's to make it understandable. I know I was invited on Fox News live and I made a mistake by not letting my interviewer speak. She said the beginning I only had 10 minutes and I took 18 minutes. I was excited to have a national spotlight for that long was exhilarating that I could get my message out there to the masses like never before. I have to tell you it was fun, but my wife yelled at me for not giving the interviewer a chance to ask me any fellow questions. I believe it came off pretty good. I think the viewers could see that I was excited about what we were doing for all the vets!

In addition to knowing the person's voice, it is critical to know the core 2 or 3 messages that they are trying to communicate in the speech. Stories are the most engaging way to communicate your message whatever it is. Take your audience on a journey regardless of the subject matter.

Again I'm old school and I really don't do a lot of that especially if it's my speech. I basically have bullets and points to stare down to but I don't look at a teleprompter or anything but just casually look down to the categories that I want to cover to give a rounded talk. You certainly don't want to lose much of your audience but you will in any case. Keeping their interest is important and only way that you will be able to get your point across as many folks as you're aiming for. I do sometimes get off in a tangent and sometimes it works and other times it's embarrassing... But I assume to get back on track.

Having recently come from days of conferences I can recall the lively presenter, the monotone presenter, the educated presenter and the presenter with no slides. Make sure you present your speech to a test audience and take feedback prior to delivering to your actual audience. Also talk to the event organiser about what works and what doesn’t. Kick-off with a steep start. It could be a longer than normal pause. A staggering stat. A piece of yourself with a personal story you're revealing for the first time. You want to stop people in their tracks and command their attention.
