What are the most effective strategies for overcoming writer's block in translation?

I like the definition and classification of writer’s block as the author of A-Z of Medical Writing presents. Read the book. I have translated it into Persian. For translators, it is somewhat the same. Sometimes, the right word or phrase doesn’t come to our mind. We know what the author wants to convey, but can’t put it in appropriate words in the target language. It can simply freeze our mind. One strategy in such situations is to avoid panicking and to work on something else, give ourselves a break. Most often, while we are playing a game on our mobile, the train of words comes to our mind. Keep in mind that translator’s (writer’s) block is not a failure. It is a good sign that you want to produce a perfect translation not an awkward one.

Break out of your comfort zone, that's obvious enough. But how? Best way is doing a trip in the farthest away from home place possible!

While breaking a task down into manageable chunks is a valuable technique, good translation requires zooming out as well. Language simply translated verbatim in small chunks runs the risk of losing the intent behind the words. This could lead to inaccurate translation. Therefore, when translating text in smaller segments so as to maintain motivation, it is absolutely critical to be strategic about the process and to ensure there is sufficient time allotted to reviewing the entire text in context.

If I find the work to be homogeneous, I will set the timer and finish the task. Then I will reread my work, often refering to a thesaurus (preferably in book form) for inspiration. As I get closer, I might send a section or two to a collegue/friend for inspiration.

Psychology supports this as well: often people find solutions to problems after taking a break. One idea is listening to music to give your left brain a break. Another idea is more recreational reading or videos in both your source and target languages. (Perhaps something will come up in a video or audio that will inspire you.)

For me, the most effective method is to take a break away from the text I am translating and keep myself busy doing another thing I love. In most cases I go for a walk, especially when the weather is nice. Having fresh air usually changes the mood and makes the mind clearer. Coming back to the text after a nice walk, I usually have newer strength to handle the text and find my way quite easily and comfortably.

We all know we get the best ideas when we first wake up, are about to fall asleep, or are in the shower. This is because the mind, heart, and body are relaxed. This is something that's underrated in most modern societies. We no longer have time to sit and reflect. At times, we may feel we're being lazy by relaxing when we're supposed to be working. The key lies in understanding what it means to relax. It does not mean to engage with games, social media, and other content on our devices. It means to do something (like the activities mentioned here) to enable the body to operate properly with minimal effort. Five minutes of staring out the window and enjoying the blue in the sky may just be the key to your next brilliant idea.

Recharge, relax and take time off. Put your feet up, put some music on. Go for a long walk, clear your mind. It helps, trust me

Flexibility and adaptability are always important aspects of a professional translator since translating has a lot to do with conveying ideas and not merely words as many would think. So being flexible and adaptable are always important for a good translator.

In my translation classes in college, I remember it being recommended we let a draft sit for a day or two before revisiting it. (I note that, when we went over our translations together in my French and Arabic translation classes in college, I found hearing my colleagues’ choices helped me, as I sometimes liked their choices better than my own choice.)

Join groups or attend conferences: Connecting with other translators or language groups can help you discuss challenges, and gain new insights. 5. Reverse translation: Trying to translate the text back to the original language can help identify problem areas or new ideas. 6. Consult the author: If possible, contacting the author can help gain insight into issues.

Pause your translation and read a book in English (assuming you are translating into English) written by a good writer. Pay attention to the writer's style and vocabulary.

So-Called “writers block,” is a self-inflicted author injury. This is NOT a mental disorder or some type of “disease,” we contract upon writing. If you take the time to organize HOW you’re going to start & finish. In the early days of World War 1, France sent a letter to the US Congress, asking for help in the form of US troops fighting with them. The French verb 'Demander' was mistranslated as "DEMAND" rather than "ASK". The French verb for "DEMAND" is 'Commander'. This mistranslation changed the entire tone of France's request when given to members of Congress. They weren't about to get invoved in a foreign war because someone 'Demanded' it, no matter what they had done to help form this country. Would history be different if that verb had been translated correctly? Would the terms of the Treaty of Versailles had been so onerous that the Weimar Republic would have occurred? What about German hyperinflation and Hitler's rise to power?

I think that asking a fellow translator or linguist might also be very helpful as we get new insights from their end. Hence, we can see the text with a different perspective and have the translation done.
