Non-traditional students are not a homogeneous group, but rather a diverse and dynamic population with different backgrounds, goals, motivations, and challenges. Some of the common factors that influence their engagement are: prior learning experiences, financial constraints, time management, family and work responsibilities, academic skills, self-efficacy, and social support. A truly student-centered approach such as Agile learning, is suitable for adult non-traditional students. Agile learning allows students more autonomy and freedom to drive their own learning. Therefore, the students can explore the scope of learning beyond classroom.

Therefore, offering flexibility and convenience in your course design and delivery is essential for engaging them. Recognizing and leveraging prior learning can help non-traditional students: save time and money by earning credit for what they already know; enhance their self-esteem and identity as learners; connect their learning to their interests and goals; and contribute to the learning community with their diverse perspectives and insights. You can recognize and leverage prior learning by: offering prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) programs or policies; using experiential, problem-based, or project-based learning methods; and inviting non-traditional students to share their stories, examples, or reflections.

é comum que tenhamos um plano ao encarar uma turma de alunos, mas o mais importante em qualquer processo educacional é ser capaz de manter os olhos e ouvidos atentos às especificidades. Cada um tem uma vivência diferente e por isso sempre pode trazer uma perspectiva diferente que pode ajudar todos a aprenderem mais e melhor. Estar aberto e observar as características do aluno é importante para fazê-lo se abrir e entender como as suas especificidades s?o engrandecedoras, como o seu olhar é único e como as suas experiências diversas representam uma forma de conhecimento. Muitas vezes a sua inseguran?a o impede de perceber o quanto o seu conhecimento é grande, embora n?o tenha ocorrido de maneira tradicional.

5 Encourage and reward engagement

Non-traditional students may have different levels and forms of engagement than traditional students, depending on their personal and contextual factors. They may not be able to attend every class, participate in every activity, or interact with every peer, but that does not mean they are not engaged. They may engage in more subtle, selective, or strategic ways, such as reading, listening, observing, or self-reflecting. Encouraging and rewarding engagement can help non-traditional students: feel more connected and involved in their learning; receive feedback and recognition for their efforts; and develop a sense of belonging and community. You can encourage and reward engagement by: using diverse and inclusive pedagogies and assessment; providing positive and constructive feedback; creating opportunities for social and emotional learning; and celebrating achievements and milestones.

Engaging non-traditional students is not only beneficial for them, but also for you and your institution. By adopting these strategies, you can create a more diverse, inclusive, and quality higher education experience for everyone.

Regardless of the student type, I recommend breaking your engagement personas into 4 types: -Fighters -Achievers -Explorers -Socializers A comprehensive engagement strategy should appeal to all four. Not just one. Fighters are competitive. Benchmarking them vs their peers motivates them. Achievers are self driven. Giving them a way to visualize their progress towards a goal motivates them to engage. Explorers are curious. Giving them multiple paths to test/experiment motivates them to engage. Socializers engage in order to interact with others. They don’t engage unless their peers already do or if their engagement helps a team they’ve been preassigned to earn points.

Having a robust student engagement platform is crucial to helping students feel connected and promote a sense of belonging. Ideally, that platform would integrate with other systems across your tech stack. Using leaderboards and gamification will also help students engage with each other.
