What are the most effective social impact frameworks for your industry?

While there are many worthwhile frameworks in the social impact space, I find that there are frameworks from outside the space that have extraordinary explanatory and catalytic power. One that I would name is the Team of Teams framework from Gen. Stan McChrystal which is culled from his extraordinary career on the battlefield. I find this framework powerful when applied to social impact because many social impact problems from climate change to economic inclusion suffer from a lack of will and a lack of coordination. ToT helps deal with the latter. Its four elements are Trust , Common Purpose, Shared Consciousness, and Empowered Execution (decisions pushed to lowest appropriate level)

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards is another framework that's applicable to most industries, providing Universal, Sector, and in some cases, Topic Standards. As its widely adopted, its particularly helpful to use for cross-sectional operations between organizations by providing compatible reporting and synthesizing impact calculations through KPI's. The GRI's additionally are beneficial in adhering to global concerns of data accessibility, transparency, and traceability.

One can leverage many frameworks to empower individuals through digital inclusion. Access-Equity-Outcome, Capability Approach, CBPR, Human-Centered Design, and Social Network Analysis are all great options that are effective in reaching underserved communities. Design Thinking is seen a lot in entrepreneurial settings, which includes Non-profits and social impact. Equity Centered Design is related, and should be the gold standard for social impact. This approach emphasizes the first step of empathizing with your clients. This means interviewing for lived experience, and ensuring you understand their perspective. This also means, ensuring your clients are part of creating the solution. This ensures that you are providing what they actually need, and they have stake in the solution and are more likely to support it, both of these things increase the sustainability of the solution.
