What are the most effective networking strategies for HR professionals across international borders?

It's important to recognize these challenges and adapt your networking strategies accordingly. Additionally, while conferences and seminars are valuable, they might not always provide the depth of connections you need. Therefore, leveraging technology for virtual networking can bridge geographical gaps. However, it's crucial to respect local etiquette and be mindful of cultural differences in communication styles. Ultimately, the key to successful international networking is building relationships based on mutual respect and shared professional goals.

I've found that success in online platforms centers on focusing on ways to add real value. Especially in the online world, sharing content and resources targeted at the people you are looking to build relationships with helps create credibility and opens the door for reciprocity.

Networking is essential for HR professionals, especially when working across international borders. Effective networking can help you stay updated on global HR trends, expand your knowledge, and build valuable relationships. Due to my experience and researching, here are some strategies for HR professionals looking to network internationally: -Attend Global HR Conferences and Seminars -Join International HR Associations -Online Networking -Collaborate with Multinational Companies -Engage in Cross-Cultural Training -Establish Relationships with Global Recruitment Firms -Utilize Social Media -Attend Webinars and Virtual Events -Be an Active Participant -Follow Up and Maintain Relationships

Find and join meaningful groups, within and beyond your usual geography. There is a lot you can learn just by reading the posts and questions raised about scenarios in different countries. If you don't know where to start a good place is to join the community groups associated with the professional HR bodies (SHRM, CIPD etc.) where you gain a great insight into real world situations and how they are approached different under different legislations or cultures. From here you will find contributors you resonate with or can learn from and it is a case of being bold enough to reach out - the overwhelming majority of professionals are keen to connect and share knowledge and experience.

Effective networking strategies include participating in global HR conferences and forums, joining international HR associations, and leveraging social media platforms such as LinkedIn to connect with professionals worldwide. Collaborating on cross-border HR projects and seeking mentorship from experienced global HR leaders can also broaden your network. Being open to diverse perspectives and cultural nuances is key to successful international networking, as it fosters a deeper understanding of global HR practices and trends.

I sometimes find it challenging to make the most of large networking events, there is often very little time between the scheduled sessions to make lasting, relevant connections. I have found more success in attending and hosting smaller, focused events around a particular topic. I recently co-hosted a small HR summit with the Josh Bersin Academy and Microsoft in Zurich around the impact of AI within HR and it was a great way to bring professionals together to share openly about the opportunities and challenges they are facing with AI and create a network for ongoing dialogue, support, and collaboration.

This is a failsafe way to enter the networking world especially if you one has no clue on how to begin. Joining associations like SHRM, ICF, NHRD or other equivalent associations, helps since they do organize regular meet ups (both virtual and in person) which goes a long way in fostering more interactions and eventually finding like-minded professionals to connect with.

Other associations which I have found helpful are Project Management Institute (PMI) and PMP association if you want to cut across a broader network of professionals without having to silo yourself to a specific industry. Most professionals in mid-senior level have in a way or 2 got themselves certified and active within project management associations

Two of the most immediate and effective ways for me are: - LinkedIn HR groups (shameless plug). - Cultivating relationships with HR SaaS vendors. - Maintaining relationships with people I meet during the interview process, even from those that send rejections. I have actually received a job offer from a company that originally rejected me.

I fully agree with this. I’ve been very intentional on making the effort to maintain relationships that were either created across the companies I’ve worked for or the countries I’ve worked with. I believe by leveraging the experiences and different backgrounds we build a stronger basis for the challenges we face throughout our careers. It’s very beneficial in many ways: by exchanging experiences, best practices, networking and even for relocation and referrals. I only see the positive side of doing this. I do it with a lot of joy and pride for the relationships I’ve been able to maintain along the years.

Having connected with many HR professionals around the world using Linkedin, I have been so surprised at the value of this for both being a better HR practitioner but also my learning and flexibility in my work. If we are running in the same circles with people who are having the same or similar lived experiences of HR, growth will be limited.

Other un-orthodox and free approaches to expand our network are to always make a point in asking for referrals from your existing network of candidates in other regions, arrange a weekly collaboration of leads/network sharing with your peers in other office locations, arrange a half-day session to meet up with mid-senior level professionals when you are travelling to other regions. You may alternatively want to consider partnership with news channel industry or professional platforms and offering to share some valuable insights on development of the market you specialize in. Partnership with news broadcasting agencies will further seal your credibility in the industry and its a free publicity platform to attract high caliber talent.

From my HR professional perspective, expanding your network across borders is essential. Engage in international HR events and communities to gain insights and connections. I believe language skills relevant to your target regions can be a valuable asset. It shows your commitment to global networking. Cultural sensitivity is key.
