What are the most effective models for teacher evaluation and feedback in academic administration?

Most schools will have an appraisal and/or performance management system, and using data from a range of sources to evaluate the impact of a teacher is key. In my current school, we look at student progress data, what quality assurance information tells us, progress against professional learning objectives, contribution to the wider school and all teachers have the opportunity to say why they are effective, rather than it simply being told to them! This is because we strongly believe that giving agency and ownership for the process to teachers helps them feel part of the process, rather than the process happening to them.

Effective teacher evaluation and feedback models in academic administration focus on growth and collaboration. Incorporate a combination of formative and summative assessments, allowing for continuous improvement. Implement peer observation programs to encourage shared insights and best practices. When it comes to evaluation, there will always be challenges. However, what is more important as to how to go about contextualizing the feed back being received from those multiple measures. For instance, if a university does not have research culture and infrastructure then this fact must be kept in mind in evaluating entry level professor's accomplishment.

En términos generales se sugiere sistematizar la evaluación con objetivos: 1: a nivel organizacional, y posteriormente por tareas u objetivos académicos. Mediante un cuestionario aplicado a docentes y representantes de la comunidad educativa.

Peer feedback is excellent but power dynamic must be managed in those environments, where professional norms are weak. A better alternative is mentor and protege model, where a senior well-established professor takes a junior one into his/her wings and while providing feedback also opens up a few doors for him/her.

Nobody knows our work better than our colleagues. Peer evaluation can be the most effective and efficient method for assessing the capabilities and merits of the work. The suggestion that those who give us feedback are our equals is what can best help us improve in our day-to-day activities.

An evaluation and feedback model to consider would be one that represents the evaluation process as something dialectical and, therefore, dynamic. In addition, to recognize that this process involves various contexts and situations. On the other hand, the idea that evaluation is not a final instance but a continuous process aimed at generating opportunities for training and improvement.

No cabe duda , que la retroalimentación obtenida de un proceso evaluatorio serio y responsable, nos conduce indefectiblemente a un doble crecimiento. Por un lado al crecimiento profesional, dado que nos brinda nuevas y mejores herramientas para nuestro desempe?o diario, coadyuvando a logros mayores en nuestro alumnado. Por otro lado, el crecimiento personal, en virtud de la satisfacción que produce haber surcado nuevos retos y haberlos superado.

It can never be over emphasied having an ethos of acceptance in any academic sphere is hetched on communication hence the reality of feedback literacy. The academic family (employers, employees, supervisors, heads of departments etc.), without asking know, who they are and, whose they are (roles and responsibilities), with a sense of purpose. Feedback literacy cannot be outdated, instead it stands ready to be updated.

En mis a?os de docencia en diversos niveles de la ense?anza, he comprobado que el proceso de evaluación- retroalimentacion implica múltiples acciones intrínsecas propias de un educador, pero por sobre todo implica búsqueda, investigación, implica desafíos nuevos. En principio,pone en juego nuestro andamiaje como investigadores de la educación: establecer una hipótesis a resolver, buscar intensamente nuestras estrategias a traves de bibliografia, interacción con pares, etc, hasta dar finalmente con las conclusiones en relación al planteo inicial. Luego, nos enfrenta al desafío de llevar a la práctica aquello que investigamos y nos propusimos. Indudablemente el aprendizaje es infinito. El techo lo ponemos nosotros, el techo no existe.

Again I feel as this is an oversimplification. With any study or curriculum, we would start by identifying our goals. I’ve written elsewhere about identifying the purpose of your institution and then we should create evaluations based off the goals of the institution. However, I do agree with multiple measures. For a research facility: I would look in the short term for publications but in the long term I would compare the holistic impact on research. How many students went to grad school? How many contributed to research? For teaching focused institutions: I would look in the short term to the student and peer evaluations, but in the long term what percentage of students graduate? How are their job prospects? What was their grad GPA?

There is always room for evaluating teaching, and the research that informs teaching. But it must always be done in a collegiate and fair fashion, appreciating that staff are very often overworked, juggling the multiple demands of teaching and research these days. We are not in some kind of service industry where students are customers who need to be happy with a product. So more than “teacher evaluation” - most colleagues teach with dedication and hard work- what is more crucial is an evaluation of senior management in academia. Is there sufficient investment in infrastructure? Are pay and working conditions fair? Is there an adequate transparent promotion process? So focus on evaluating those with six figure salaries…

One to one sessions is a great tool to collect feedback from the team. Many team members may feel marginalized because of their work nature or character. Yet, they need a platform to express their concerns and suggestions. When we allow our team to open up about how well things are going, we create a space for growth and constructive communication, with a personal touch.

Consider how teacher practices impact student learning outcomes, classroom climate, and overall professional development. Encourage open communication and feedback from teachers to administrators. This reciprocal process builds trust and fosters a collaborative evaluation culture.
