What are the most effective methods for measuring team performance?

Everyone has got variety of talents for performing any task. On the selection of any task we should keep in mind what type of work is to be allocated to that team member. Whether he is fit for this type of task and whether he can smartly manage the task within given time. By the time specific members are allocated for performing various tasks smoothly and for satisfactory completion.

In my view there are a few approaches to this. SMART objectives are fine but without proper connection and guidance it’s not smart at all. In my experience consistency and rigour in processes and comms are the key. E.g. - standardised reporting assists greatly as a comparator of quality across a business unit. - establishing regular stakeholder meetings to deliver key messaging and outcomes in a consistent manner. - effective and regular 1:1 meetings that track progress, provide 2 way feedback, and how you can support your staff.

Agreed. This is a great tool. However, most performance metrics in business are quantitative because it is deemed to be easier, and the data is more readily available accessible, and, apparently “numbers don’t lie” (cracks me up every time someone says this to me). Financials alone imply an imbalance under this framework and for a raft of reasons. Look up Behavioural Finance if you don’t understand why. Measurement of team and business performance in conjunction with quant metrics readdresses the balance. This will be pegged against engagement scores, demonstrated cultural values, alignment to strategy, cross functional relationships and the like. These qualitative measures are easier to measure than you think. It just requires leadership.

Agreed. It also requires objective thinking and the ability to ask the right questions in a critical manner noting a comprehensive and balanced view is being sought. Feedback also needs to be relevant to the person, team, or topic. Personal agendas, hearsay, and gossip need to be pulled up immediately and the conversation needs to be reframed if this occurs. In some instances having an impartial 3rd party may help. In a HBR article I read recently Amy Edmondson et al talked about Culture Brokers who work across teams and business units in an ambassadorial capacity. I love this idea.

Deren Zufriedenheit ist für mich die beste Messlatte. Allerdings - Führungskr?fte aufgepasst - man muss hier immer auch darauf achten, dass solche Feedback-Runden nicht instrumentalisiert werden um "alte Rechnungen zu begleichen".

Wie schon bei 3 ausgeführt - Umfragen sind sicher ein probates Mittel - ob man diese neudeutsch mit Anglizismen betitelt oder schlicht Meinungsumfrage nennt. Insgesamt muss man aber sich auch immer eine eigene Meinung bilden und diese ebenfalls kritisch hinterfragen. Nur weil man ein Verhalten beobachtet, dass - sagen wir mal - ungew?hnlich ist, darf man daraus keinesfalls eine generalisierte Bewertung ableiten.

Bei Erfolgen stellt sich immer die Frage ob die Leistung au?ergew?hnlich war, also hat man die geplanten Ziele deutlich übertroffen. Wenn nicht, ist es lediglich "business as usual". Was Misserfolge anbelangt, stellt sich immer die Frage "Was ist Misserfolg?". Waren die Verhandlungsziele des internen Kunden unrealistisch und gilt somit das Nicht-Erreichen als Misserfolg oder das Erreichte als Erfolg? Einen echten Misserfolg auszumachen und Verbesserung zu erzielen ist schwierig und mit gro?er Vorsicht zu betrachten, im Team zu besprechen und eine gemeinsame Sicht zu entwickeln. Wenn das Team einen Misserfolg ortet, kann man darauf aufbauend Verbesserungen entwickeln.

Feedback should be as close to real time as possible. After a big meeting, take 5 minutes to pull your team aside and give a couple quick notes on what went well and anything you noticed that could go better. This shouldn’t be in lieu of year-end performance reviews but it helps internalize in real time and hopefully prevent surprises during formal review time. Just like the best quality and safety practices are continuous and woven into the fiber of everything else, so too are the best performance feedback practices.
