Some standards are non-optional, in order to sell certain groups of products into certain markets, a manufacturer or developer has to demonstrate compliance to all applicable product standards or safety standards. Some standards are developed in-house by businesses to improve reliability of a process or quality of a product. A good example of a Standard Operating Procedure is torque tightening mechanical fasteners in mechanical assemblies. Torque tightening ensures all fasteners are tightened to the correct level to ensure product reliability against the design specification.

Continuous improvement can be small incremental changes to a process that gradually improve the efficiency of that process. Many improvement projects begin as personal projects of engineers and operators who feel that certain processes are ineffective or inefficient and so become a bottleneck or source of frustration. Continuous improvement doesn't have to mean a huge overhaul of an assembly line, it can be a streamlined form or a new piece of equipment to replace old.
