What are the most effective informatics applications in public health?

Public health informatics is the use of data, information systems, and technology to improve the health of populations and communities. 1 Disease surveillance

One of the core functions of public health informatics is to monitor the occurrence and spread of diseases and health conditions, and to detect and respond to potential threats and emergencies. Disease surveillance systems collect, integrate, and analyze data from various sources, such as health care providers, laboratories, pharmacies, and electronic health records, to generate timely and accurate information on the epidemiology and burden of diseases. Some examples of effective disease surveillance applications are the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS), which tracks the incidence and trends of over 100 infectious and non-infectious diseases in the United States, and the Global Public Health Intelligence Network (GPHIN), which uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing to scan online media and other sources for early signals of public health events around the world.

2 Outbreak response

Another key role of public health informatics is to support the rapid and coordinated response to outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, Ebola, and influenza. Outbreak response applications use data and technology to facilitate the identification, investigation, and management of cases and contacts, the allocation and distribution of resources and supplies, the communication and collaboration among stakeholders, and the evaluation and improvement of interventions. Some examples of effective outbreak response applications are the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), which trains and deploys epidemiologists to investigate and contain outbreaks in the field, and the HealthMap, which visualizes and disseminates real-time information on emerging and ongoing outbreaks across the globe.

3 Health promotion

Public health informatics also contributes to the promotion of healthy behaviors and lifestyles, the prevention of chronic diseases and injuries, and the improvement of quality of life and well-being. Health promotion applications use data and technology to design and deliver evidence-based interventions that target individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and environmental factors that influence health. Some examples of effective health promotion applications are the Text4Baby, which sends free text messages to pregnant women and new mothers with tips and reminders on prenatal and postnatal care, and the SmokefreeTXT, which provides personalized support and encouragement to smokers who want to quit.

Health promotion applications are essential in the modern day economy. They enable users to gain access to better sources of information to best advise their health journey. In the future, these apps could potentially include more features such as personal progress tracking, access to one-on-one conversations with licensed professionals, and AI-based components to adapt to each user's health journey. These features would add another layer of accessibility and promotion that would greatly benefit a wide range of use cases.

4 Health equity

Public health informatics also aims to address the social and structural determinants of health, and to reduce the disparities and injustices that affect the health of marginalized and vulnerable populations. Health equity applications use data and technology to identify and measure the gaps and barriers in access to health care and social services, to advocate for and implement policies and programs that address the root causes of inequities, and to empower and engage communities in participatory and collaborative action. Some examples of effective health equity applications are the Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (HEAT), which enables users to analyze and visualize health inequalities across different dimensions and indicators, and the Community Health Status Indicators (CHSI), which provides comprehensive and comparative data on the health status and determinants of health for over 3,000 U.S. counties.

In health equity it is important to create understanding of, and access to treatments that have a better outcome for women and other marginalized groups. In this context is important to give access to gender segregated data as well as data that is segregated for other intersectional aspects, such as ethnicity and social economic status. Decision makers along the patient journey have ti get the chance to choose treatment with the best outcome for the patient.
