For public web/data sharing access which is non critical in nature, we can rely on third party identity service providers like google, fb etc in conjunction with protocols like OpenID connect/OAuth with out need to maintain a large DB of user info. For Org requirement , it is better to have IAM with RBAC /TBAC features for employees and other stakeholders (AD/LDAP/Kerberos Protocols) For mission critical systems, a privileged Access control (PAM) auth system may be required which gives fine grained control over the session. Still for higher security measures, we can combine this with MFA - a versatile combination of complex passwords, pins, tokens, TOTP and biometrics. But remember is a tradeoff between security, cost and performance
