What is the most effective approach to a new environmental consulting project?

Scope definition for projects and contracts is all very well where all parameters are known, but large complex environmental risk assessments (like COMAH ERA) are a series of doors which open and close. Opening a new door may open up a series of doors behind that one, all of which may lead down an unexpected route. It is important to build in flexibility on cost and time to avoid either the client or the consultant losing out.

One thing I found helpful is understanding the project's scope (Janet Greenwood's comments) planning based on available resources at hand and setting out a reliable ME protocol to improve processes.

This is the most vital step to a projects success. It is not until you fully understand the scope that you can effectively perform your work and provide recommendations to a client.

In my opinion, defining the scope includes understanding the collaboration between contractors on the project. Having a clear understanding between all contractors and the EAP means that there are no 'hidden' possibilities for unclear snowballing around the activities taking place.

An example of potential deviation is in addressing the presumed seedling shortage on the West Coast. This can lead to the presumed shortage of seed availability. Research of the pertinent data relative to a project is both a function of time and experience. How willing are you to delve into the background of the area in question with -- sometimes -- mountains of information, and how much background do you have that allows you to shave time off of that assimilation process. How often have you personally performed the actions required of the people that previously performed them onsite? Without both a willingness to contribute your time and prior awareness it is difficult to identify data gaps that need to be addressed. One may also be unaware of where the data seems to be misrepresented. Additional outside sources of information are oftentimes invaluable in this process.

Always, start by checking the requirements from the regulatory body, guidelines from international organizations etc, to align the deliverables / milestones accordingly. Project/Site specific data collection along with review of outcomes from similar projects will also add value at this stage.

As well as not only checking with regulatory agencies, but also any certifications and the processes for the certifications the client holds or is looking to attain.

I also think it’s important to do a deep dive on the history of the project and the client. Some environmental projects last years or even decades and can outlast the personnel working on them. By reviewing old reports and submissions, you can learn a lot about potential challenges you might encounter. See what past permits/coverages they may have had. Are any of them necessary to have once again? Are there any errors and omissions in past submittals that need to be corrected?

I must understand the significance of tailoring the delivery of solutions and their underlying rationale to clients and stakeholders. Beyond standard reporting, I should offer a nuanced perspective, emphasizing practical implications and sustainability. This approach can involve crafting comprehensive presentations, reports, and documents that not only encapsulate the project's scope, methods, findings, recommendations, and conclusions but also provide a clear path forward. Importantly, I have to seek feedback and suggestions, to address concerns, foster collaboration, and ensure satisfaction. My commitment to transparent, expert-level communication sets me apart in the field of environmental consulting.

Present solutions, rationale, and findings to clients and stakeholders through oral or written means. Share comprehensive reports summarizing project scope, methods, recommendations, and conclusions. Actively seek and incorporate feedback for continuous improvement and client satisfaction. This ensures transparency, understanding, and collaboration throughout the environmental consulting project.

In my experience, I have learned that having frequent check-ins with the stakeholders not only ensures project performance but also ensures there is no risk or lags to meeting project deadline. It is also a good time to check in with the project scope and ensure no changes are needed from the client or consultant.

Lesson learned can be properly documented for future reference by going over the challenges faced, solutions implemented during each stage of the project with the team members. Inputs and perspective from all team members must be weighed in.
