In my academic career, I've embraced the collegial model, which values staff participation in decision-making. It's rooted in principles like academic freedom and peer review. This model really fosters a strong community feel, trust among colleagues, and brings diverse perspectives to the table, enhancing creativity. However, its reliance on consensus can sometimes slow things down, and it's not always the most efficient. It also has its challenges, like potential tensions between academic and administrative goals, and sometimes between various disciplines and departments. Despite these issues, I find its collaborative nature beneficial for a healthy academic environment.

I am a big believer in shared governance. However, it is generally not well understood by the stakeholders. I have worked at several universities, not one of which had a document that clearly defined what decisions were under the pervue of the faculty with consultation with administration, which were made by admins with consultation with the faculty, and which required consensus building. Without clearly defining these domains there is a lot of confusion and hard feelings. Unfortunately, it is a can of worms that most institutions are wary of opening.

No model will be successful without building trust and communication. Organizations must make these priorities. When these are partvof a clearly defined and purposefully achieved workplace culture, any model can be successful at reaching organizationsl goals.

Reflecting on my experiences, there's more to successful research leadership than the standard practices. One key aspect is fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptability. This means encouraging the team to stay updated with the latest research trends and methodologies, and being open to adapting our approaches as needed. Another critical element is emotional intelligence. Understanding and managing not just my own emotions, but also empathizing with my team members, has been vital in creating a supportive and productive work environment.
