What are the most common travel scams and how can you avoid them?

I have always used reputable companies to book travel for my boss. It may cost a little more, but it is a comfort for he and I to know his travel is aligned with the major airlines and hotels. We also have a company account with a car rental service. So it is easy to call then and have his car ready when he arrives. As I said, I know this may be more expensive, but when he gets to China, I know it is a smooth travel process and he will be safe.

I agree with Nancy Brooks and would add one more thing. Any additional expense incurred by using reputable companies would be absolutely dwarfed by the expense of having someone lose a day or more of productivity in the field, or limited ability to concentrate on the goals of the trip due to trying to plan for what might go wrong next.

This is incredibly hard! Sometimes being firm, especially when you do not speak the same language is challenging and can be uncomfortable. This has happened to me and I have been forced to buy very suspicious art from someone in Beijing. Another common scam is the 'free' tea ceremonies. If anyone offers you the art or tea ceremonies, you have to be firm and walk away. This will often cost a lot of money, and they try their best to confuse you and target your guilt. I would recommend booking as many tours as possible. I love to travel solo, but I have found booking walking tours, bus tours, and food tours are a great way to explore safely with a reputable guide, and meet some new people, and these avoid these scams!

Always keep your bag in sight and if you can choose one with a zip. When I travel, I have been very lucky, but I am always cautious and often split my valuables up in different pockets. I choose a jacket with a secret pocket and leave my valuable items (watch/bracelet) at home when I can. I only carry one card (most banks are able to freeze your card via their app almost instantly) and try and avoid carrying cash. Walk along bus routes, so if you do see anyone suspicious, you can hop on the next bus, or chances are there are more people around you.

Beware of continental breakfast: Surprisingly this is not breakfast in third world country, but right here on a beach front hotel with oceanview balconies in Galveston, Texas. In July 2022, I was shocked to see only instant coffee and mini muffins served for a so-called continental breakfast in front desk cafeteria at Commodore Hotel. Spectacular oceanview! Great waterfront location! But that breakfast was substandard comic relief. In December 2004, I stayed at B&B just 3 blocks from Vatican in Rome. The host served danish and instant coffee for continental breakfast for 2 days. On third and last day, I decided to kindly ask for full American breakfast with fried eggs and sausage. Sometimes you have to ask and it will be answered.
