Thus, it is essential that middle management's mindset is properly guided towards safety and health.

It’s the workers. This means our primary focus should be on engaging the workers and ensuring they understand the purpose of the SMS. The most effective way to avoid pitfalls (system failures) is active involvement with your boots on the ground. Practical alignment, leadership engagement, and being genuinely supportive in regard to incident reporting are key. Align policies with real-world needs, engage leadership in safety, provide thorough training, and actively encourage incident reporting. This approach ensures that HSMS isn't just paperwork but a genuine commitment to safety. Workers don't want to see you holding a clipboard with a checklist every time you're on site. Safety ultimately is about humanity, don't be a robot.
