What are the most common mistakes when setting goals?

I've noticed that leaders tend to write goals that may be unachievable and assume that is what is expected. Having realistic goals and knowing that progress may be slow initially is important and makes meeting goals more likely.

When setting goals, having a mentor help you craft them (and stay rooted in reality) and then keep you accountable while you execute them increases the likelihood of achieving them.

It’s always been a simple thought process for me, targets/goals that are truly relevant and necessary to go after and achieve. That way my mindset can be attuned to achievement. Now a roadmap or strategy can be be planned to achieve. I’m not one for buzz words and the likes and l like to keep things as simple as possible

Since I am in sales, high ticket sales for a franchise its half a mil at least and above for per unit sales. Often I was asked by the franchisor HQ company that please tell us about your 3-5-10 years goal with a report. And I asked them What is your budget for marketing, When you wish to catch a butterfly you do not go run after it, but you plant beautiful flowers and attract them to come over. Same logic. Knowing what threshold you want to cross and why is a fresh take on embodied goal setting. Give it a try: Me: What threshold do you want to cross? You: Answer ________ Me: Why? You: Because ________ In all the work I have done on purpose, truly finding your "Why" can be a stone cold challenge. I prefer to ask clients to write a "Because Manifesto" at least 50. Because, Because, Because, Because, Because. As the patterns emerge, so does your Why. Your Purpose. Your Motivating Transformational Force. And Knowing what will change in and around you as a result.

Having a mentor, coach, or trusted friend that is aware of your goals, to hold you accountable by checking in periodically (reasonably based on the length of time needed to accomplish the goal) is a means to achieve your end. Plan on someone to keep you on track when (and you will) wander off. Even the most lofty of goals can be achieved when broken down and properly planned.

You must have a “battle plan” or there is no clear path towards achievement. Creating this plan with “steps” that need to be taken can make the goals seem more realistic and achievable. Monitoring performance also is key, and will give you an idea on how well the team is working together, and if there are any performance issues that need to be addressed.

The most common mistakes I saw in the western companies who wish to come to Singapore or SEA or China Markets was, They think know these markets better than every local person out there. Saying "localization" daily, but zero action. I am an asian consultant with beautiful track record, that is the reason the western companies hired me to start with. And what is the point of suggesting opposite for everything I suggest with then. "In the west, we did XX way" Then Why come to Asia. Maybe we do things a bit differently here in Asia then in the west. If this asian particular butterflies(local cliient) only likes red flowers, then we plant the red to attract them Then stop telling me the western butterflies love blue, Not relevant.

Setting unrealistic goals is most definitely one of the largest issues as they will most likely lead to failure. It is demotivating & unproductive. It can make employees feel” not good enough”

Most common error we see is goals within an organisation focuses too much on the outcome and not enough on the behavioural input required. For example: "I will improve my sales coversions from 30% to 40% by the end of the quarter" vs. "I will work on my open questions with all customers, specifically (this question) and I will do that 5 times per day. My aim is to improve my sales conversions from 30% to 40%"
