What are the most common mistakes when persuading your audience?

It's essential to provide your audience with content that helps to educate or give them the ability to act by—tailoring your message to their interest, knowledge, and expectations. It enables you to communicate more effectively, making the presentation more engaging and relevant to your audience's needs.

Being too pushy or aggressive. People don't like to be told what to do. If you come across as too pushy or aggressive, you'll likely alienate your audience. Instead, focus on building relationships and trust.

The best way to persuade is to win over their trust, confidence and respect. Keep ot simple and short. Minimise use of Jargons and make them understand the concept, beliefs and reason. Understand the difference between argument and discussion. Make them understand what is in for us.

In my early presentation days, I learned that successful communication hinges on connecting with your audience as individuals first. Instead of overcomplicating with excessive selling, focus on genuine connection. Additionally, recognizing and addressing the diverse values within the audience allows for effective segmentation, resulting in an engaged and active audience. In summary, connecting on a human level and tailoring your approach to individual values is key to making a lasting impact.

You need to rehearse your presentation. Confidence is key to effective presentation delivery. Rehearsing not only improves your physical movements but also boosts your overall confidence in delivering the presentation, leading to a more compelling performance. Movement and timing, even when subtle, should be intentional. Rehearsal allows you to fine-tune the coordination and timing of your movements in sync with your speech. The more you repeat specific motions, the stronger the neural connections become in the areas of your brain responsible for motor skills. This enhanced muscle memory enables you to perform the movements effortlessly and accurately. And if something throws you off, you can more easily get back on track.

One thing I found helpful is to start with the end goal in mind. What are the 3 key things that you want your key audience to remember the day and year after. Knowing this helps you think of your audience, focus your story and supports building a clear structure that helps your audience remember.

If you are wanting to land a important point or manage change in an organisation, start by stating what you are going to communicate "we are going to announce changes to how we evaluate performance through x, y, and z." Then explain the changes in the detail. Then recap to reiterate to ensure everyone has understood. Ending with a pulse survey or interactive quiz validates whether the audience has understood the content.

One prevalent blunder in persuading your audience is the absence of a clear structure. Depending on your objective and who you're talking to, various templates can elevate the impact of your presentation. Models like AIDA, AIDPPC, SSS, or the Heroes Journey offer diverse frameworks. A well-organized structure enhances your message, ensuring it resonates effectively and wields substantial influence. Whether you're capturing attention, driving interest, or guiding through a journey, employing a strategic model optimizes the persuasive potential of your communication.

Not providing enough evidence or logic. People are more likely to be persuaded if you can provide them with concrete evidence to support your claims. If you're relying on emotion or logic alone, you're unlikely to be successful.

Exercise caution when using AI tool (especially Chat GPT) and always validate your sources. Often, Chat GPT will say things like "companies like X tend to . . ." - don't take this as a fact, do your own research.

Using one’s own authentic experience has often been most successful in connecting and convincing an audience to value your point of view. Leveraging others’ experiences often lack the impact that your authentic experiences bring. Your emotional connection is more honest, your ability to convey your story is fluid and your audience feels your passion and often is more willing to embrace your point of view.

Rambling will tarnish your credibility. Therefore, keep limit your responses with precision, to the point, and shorter the better.

It is always good to use evidence that is relatable to your customers/audience. That way it is easy to capture their attention as well as influence a perspective towards them. It goes to show that you know them and understand their needs and wants better than anyone else and of course, you’ve done your research.

Avoid using "vague" and unspecific terms such as "too many". Always show your reference and cite the source and be ready to answer" where and how"you came up with this.

I agree, we must always be considerate to the emotions of our audience. The best way to do is by making the audience comfortable. Most common mistakes that usually happen is while giving impromptu examples or sharing stories without understanding it’s impact on our audience.

Don't ignore your emotions and values while presenting as that is the only catch or connect that audience have with you. If you try to portray a strong personality while your topic is 'Enhance your mindset', you may need to tone it down a little bit where the audience relates to you. Remember relatability helps in sustainability.

To captivate my audience, I love incorporating fun giveaways into my presentations. For instance, at the Southeast veterinary conference, which was beach-themed, I spiced things up by giving away boogie boards and shark-themed stuffed animals. Similarly, for a day-long event with the North Carolina Vet Med Association Meeting, I introduced entertaining games before each lecture to inject a bit of liveliness. A quick trip to the dollar store allowed me to grab some playful signs and stickers, adding an extra layer of engagement. When you're tasked with holding an audience's attention for several hours, it's essential to mix things up with these small, yet impactful, touches.

Nobody likes to be lectured at. Bringing your audience with you on the adventure is essential. This can be as simple as asking questions and getting people to raise their hands, making eye contact or smiling. The key goal is to encourage a feeling of closeness and rapport with the audience as that is what will open their hearts and minds to your perspective.

I think there's a reason why trainers nowadays are called facilitators. Gone are those days when the audience would sit and hear a person ramble all day long. If your audience is not engaged, they will not remember your message, and you will not be able to persuade them.

Unfortunately presenting to people I believe is a skill, and often an "expert" can be a poor communicator or presenter, and this is a shame for the expert. I have four top tips for making presentations interesting and engaging: 1. Try not to use powerpoint etc, or if you do, go off the slides and add more to the information, or advise they can read more detailed info on slides handed out/distributed later. 2. Always make it funny and add a personal story - inject humour, a few jokes, you don't have to be a stand-up comedian, but make it vibrant. 3. Prepare, prepare, prepare, record yourself if possible - would you be engaged if you were listening? 4. Use props, costumes, audience participation - these presentations are often memorable.

Your presentation is a chance to have a conversation with all the people in your audience. Most often you only have one shot to do it right and you cannot adjust to each individual in the audience, so you have to make sure you have the right message, tone and timing for most of them. This is not easy. The best presentors I know tell a story that seems to come natural and effortless, it all fits together miraculously and has a clear message. But that is only because the "blood, sweat and tears" were visible in the days/weeks before with knowing your audience & aligning, words, feelings and timing. And indeed, if needed practicing in front of a mirror or test audience. Perfecting it to ensure it right in the spotlight.

Any presentation needs to written down no matter how short, and you need to practice your delivery. Presentations are not effective without preparation. The average Ted talk of 18min requires 200 hours of prep.

I agree, there needs to be good bit of reversing to improvise our delivery. I believe we should never script what we plan to speak out word by word, it should always be some highlights/points and we need to master the art of storytelling which will eventually make us get better everytime. Rehearsal help us in identifying the right content and context, the best way is to record ourself and watch the same as audience and improvise.

In sales, the more you rehearse the delivery of your presentation or pitch, the more fluid it will become. Ideally, if its something you intend on delivering many times, you should get to a point where you no longer have to think "what comes next". If your delivery of the message is muscle memory, then you can concentrate on how your audience is recieving it and be more prepared for interruptions or other distractions that might otherwise derail a solid presentation. Preparing the audience is also key. Make sure all of your audience is comfortable and you have their full attention and try and establish some rapport with the main decision makers in the group. If you control the controllable, then you'll have the very best chance of success.

One thing that has been a real concern for me is consistency in everything that I do so that means that practice makes me feel like I'm not trying to escape reality

Be you, but the YOU that would like to hear when presenting. Put yourself as the audience, to see how would you understand better the type of argument that's going to be discussed.

Find the identity that makes you feel comfortable to deliver your message. When I was younger, I would wear a suit with a shirt and tie to deliver a presentation. I felt more confident, and it helped overcome a level of imposter syndrome. I also learnt the material quite meticulously. As I got older and more experienced, I felt able to be a more able to turn up in casual clothes and be myself more and worried less about the specifics of the content. The core messages are the same and it was easier to read the room and adapt to reiterate the key points I felt were getting a message across.

In my experience, 'good tasteful humor' has always helped in resonating with the audience. It has bridged the gap and lightened the mood of the audience. A well-placed joke or a light moment has catapulted engagement beyond levels of acceptance to fanatism.

Si crees que tu etiqueta (cargo) dentro de la empresa y tus galones (formación) son suficientes para generar autoridad y por extensión ser una persona más persuasiva, estás muy equivocado. Esto, que es lo que yo llamo "sacar pecho como los palomos" crea una falsa sensación de autoridad. Lo que realmente la audiencia está pensado es en lo pedante que es el ponente. Alimentar y mostrar tu ego hará que tu nivel de persuasión caiga a lo más profundo del averno. Una presentación "se trata de ellos y no de ti" y cuando conectas, eres mucho más persuasivo.
