Actually, the mistake number 1, 2 and 3 is not checking how predictive the engagement metric is for the key business metrics. For example, say "churn" is a critical indicator for your business. In this case you might want to make sure that what you're measuring as "engagement" (MAU, time spent on the course, completion rate, etc.) can work as a leading indicator for a lower churn rate.
