What are the most common mistakes people make when writing their education section?

It’s important to keep your resume’s Education section relevant. You want to think about your audience. If you’re a recent graduate, your audience might care about your GPA, coursework, internships, and senior projects. However, if you’re a mid-level professional, none of these need to be listed. Only your degree title, school name, and graduation year. If you’re an older professional and concerned about age discrimination, it’s fine to leave your graduation date off the resume. Just keep your audience in mind while writing each section of your resume and ask yourself, “Is this relevant?”

Refine these on your resume's education section: 1. Mentioning a high school diploma: A high school diploma is expected and doesn't significantly differentiate experienced candidates. Instead, focus on highlighting your post-secondary education and relevant certifications. 2. Including GPAs: While GPAs can be relevant for entry-level positions, their emphasis often diminishes as your professional track record grows. 3. Stop including these in the education section of your resume :- 1. Listing your %age or CGPA. Stick to including only college name, degree name and year of completion. 2. Listing endless number of certifications or degrees that have no relevance. 3. Placing the education section right on top especially after you have over 1+ years of experience. 4. Placing the education related information in a tabular format. I used to do this too while writing resumes but it just messes up with the flow of the information. 5. Not listing your latest degree first. 6. Omitting coursework and project work especially if you are fresher.

The amount of information also depends on how long it's been since your recent graduation. For instance, if you are applying for another job, with a recent graduation of Bachelors, back in 2019 and now, it's been 5 years, as a QC Officer, you don't have to include much information in your education section.

If you are a recent graduate or soon to be, and wish to include courses-be sure to write out the proper names, not course numbers (i.e. CS 301), don't list everything, don't list introductory courses. Bachelor, Bachelor's, Bachelors. Master. Master's. Masters. This seems to be one of the biggest hang ups I see in educational errors. Use an apostrophe (possessive) with bachelor's degree and master's degree, but not in Bachelor of Arts or Master of Science. Do not use an apostrophe with associate degree or doctoral degree.

As someone who has worked in recruiting and has been a hiring manager for thousands of roles, it makes me CRAZY to see how little effort people put into their resume. DO pay attention to detail. Make sure everything is in the correct tense. Check punctuation, grammar, and spelling!

The common mistake I see many senior professionals make is still mentioning their High school details, GPA and adding many irrelevant certifications. If you are a fresher, it's important to add your university passing year and GPA. If you are a senior professional with 15 years of experience, it's okay to leave out your high school details and keep your degree, university name, and year of graduation.

Lots of job seekers wonder where to put their education on their resume. You should only put your education at the top if: ? You graduated from a top university like an ivy league school. ? You finished courses that are perfect for the job you're applying for. ? You did really well in activities outside of class, or if your GPA is above 3.5. If none of those apply to you, it's better to put your education lower down on your resume.

Put it another way, if you are ten years out of college and haven't done much professionally, you may want to hit the books and have either another degree in progress or be working on a certification. Education is just another form of work experience and it is one that you have control over.
