In choosing a mentor for Branding, one of the mistakes to avoid is knowing your limits in your relationship with your mentor. Your mentor can be so ready to guide you and make sure you get it right and genuinely want to see you grow but position yourself very well for him or her to see that you are also ready to be mentored in all sense. Respect your mentor’s time and plan your questions or meeting time with them carefully. Don’t jump on them anyhow. Respectfully communicate with them. Choose your words carefully and ask intelligent questions. Don’t always assume that your mentor will be free all the time. Give them time to respond to you and don’t feel entitled by constantly requesting for response. Give them time.

Online Bewertungen wie z.B. bei Google sind für mich ein gutes Indiz dafür, ob es sich um einen guten Brand Designer handelt oder nicht. In my experience, I believe one needs to make sure his/her mentor has relevant experience in branding, with a proven track record in the areas that align with their goals. And shouldn't solely rely on a mentor's job title or status. It's crucial to ensure they have the willingness and ability to guide you in your specific branding needs.

Before choosing a mentor remember that Niche matters! Brand building is different for different Niches. It's important to follow someone doing something similar to your field so you don't confuse yourself and your audience!

Mentors (powerfully) can guide us through the journey from 'where-we-are' to 'where-we-want-to-go' only if we know our destination and also if we can share the current scenario. A veces el tutoriado no entiende estos límites, he tenido momentos tensos con clientes que quieren que sea el mentor quién les diga exactamente qué hacer, cuando su trabajo es ayudarlo a construir el mejor camino aprovechando su experiencia. Un tutor no es un empleado a tiempo completo, y esto debe quedar claro, en algunas ocasiones se confunde y la relación va más allá de los parámetros de guía que son los que deben prelar en esta relación. El tutor, es un observador con la particularidad de que debe y puede dar su opinión acerca de lo que sucede en el respecto para lo que fue requerido. No es una persona que deba fichar asistencia u horario laboral.

If progress is slow and respect is not given, both parties will likely feel it’s not working out and friction will build as well as the negative feelings that come with not making progress. Be kind to yourself and respect your mentor.

To combat this - they must remember that experiments and mistakes are manifestations of someone committed to cultivating a growth-mindset. Lessons that are rooted in failure tend to fortify one’s sense of empowerment and confidence over time far more strongly than if they played it safe. That said, it is crucial to trust your gut. If something feels off - you are not obligated to act in a way that doesn’t align with your values.

I have both mentored and been mentored, and taking action makes all the difference. It makes a difference between a good mentoring relationship that benefits both people and one that feels like a waste of time. If the action is imperceptibly small, that's okay too. A consistent mentee taking small actions is all a mentor can hope for!

Es duro ver que el esfuerzo y tiempo invertido no es tomado en cuenta, saber que no se consideran los consejos del tutor, y ver que el camino del tutoriado no va en dirección de las mejoras que se pretendían construir... es decepcionante para el tutor. Al requerir un tutor debemos tener mente abierta para escuchar y a veces la soberbia del tutoriado no le permite darse cuenta que ha buscado ayuda y que aunque no esté totalmente de acuerdo con los planteamientos debe abrirse a pensar que no tiene toda la razón en sus manos y que por ello una parte de sí lo llevó a buscar esa ayuda que al final se niega a entender e implementar.

Like they say, better to take a step rather than take no step at all. Humans are bound to be afraid, but it should be embraced and accepted. Often, it’s the fear that keeps us going—fear of falling, fear of failing. Take fear in positive sense and make your life better rather than just feel scared.

You’re only as good an artist as the resources you choose to make available to you, so surround yourself with like-minded individuals. Time is your worst enemy and the veterans who have went through the most would love to help their apples grow to their full potential. Be present, be respectful, be proud, be prepared, be reliable, believe in yourself, and most importantly, credit your mentors. Everyone’s personal & professional lives change cadences. A perspective to add here is, checking if your objectives are in line with the objectives of your chosen mentor. Sometimes, a person can be good in all aspects and still not be able to cater to our needs as a mentor because our values, objectives do not align and fall in place. Mentoring is not just a connect between two people, it goes much deeper, where the mentor and the mentee need to be empathetic and understand each other.

Among all these solid advice, I’d add one more: making sure you and your mentor to be have similar if not aligned values. Too often I see the result of making this mistake as a mismatch outcome, undesired or unfulfilled result where both parties struggle and are not satisfied. So, make sure you do your homework in researching and taking the time to know a professional well before investing your time and money in working with them.
