What are the most common mistakes people make when building relationships?

The lack of self-awareness and awareness of others makes building relationships challenging. Mindful listening, understanding and showing empathy are key for building trust and nurturing a genuine relationship. When we are too focused on ourselves without considering the needs, feelings, or opinions of the other person can make the relationship one-sided and therefore unsustainable. Failing to listen actively can result in the other person feeling undervalued and not heard, hindering the development of that strong bond.

And an in-person environment, it involves looking into the other person's eyes, head nodding and not getting distracted by the annoying smartphone beeps! In a remote environment it is a little harder but can still be done. No multi-tasking. While doing video or audio calls focus on what the other person is saying.

Trying to get your point a cross without listening to another's point of view is a sign of hearing but not listening. Listening shows you're actually making an effort to pay attention to the person you're talking to.

Most common mistake is not giving before you ask for something. Nothing turns people off more than you asking them for something at the start of the relationship. In order to get people to help you, you have to help them first and do it with out expecting anything in return. Instead, when you help people, they'll say, "How can I help you?" Then you can tell them how they can help and you'll get help from them.

Relationship building takes time and effort. And if the intent of the relationship is all about "what can the other person do for me", then it is dead on arrival. It should be about giving first.

Worrying about what others are thinking, mostly. Don't stress yourself out thinking of what to say, just say it and then wait for the person's reaction first.

I want to believe that the relationship been spoken about here has to do with database tables, joins and data models. If No, then I am no relationship expert

I disagree that assertiveness is the only way to avoid the fear of conflict. Creating a culture where one can share one's feelings and having that open dialog early on in the relationship about being transparent in sharing opinions and thoughts can help pave the way for any future difficult conversations.

Avoiding conflict is a way if losing your voice. If you don't speak up for yourself, you lose your self-confidence. Negative feelings will build up until relationships are affected due to pent up resentment.

If you are going to break a promise, it is critical to let the other person know and to provide an explanation as to why the promise couldn't be kept. It's critical to do so to ensure that the other person knows this was not done out of bad intent but for other reasons.

In a similar vein, only agreeing with others and never voicing opposing thoughts can become disingenuous. If a person's feedback is only ever positive, he or she is probably being "fake." Additionally, it's boring! Having someone around who always agrees isn't interesting. It's nonthreatening to only surround oneself with supporters, but it's not very educational.

Appreciation is the act of acknowledgment or recognition. How often do you show your appreciation for your team? ? The genuine gesture of a thank you. ? The informal recognition of a job well done. ? The public highlighting of an accomplishment. Appreciation can have a powerful effect. The simple act of saying thank you can truly change the trajectory of someone’s day, and it can go a long way toward establishing and building trustful relationships. Appreciation should not be limited to special occasions because our people do outstanding work daily, and we shouldn't take that for granted. We should deliberately express our appreciation.

Failure to follow through and being inconsistent. When you only know a person when you needed them. As the saying goes - out of sight, out of mind. People should make a conscious effort to keep in touch.

In my experience, being transparent is a key. A relationship is built on trust, transparency and communication. Transparency leads to more trust in a relationship because key stakeholders know what is going on at each level or process.

While building a professional relationship, it is imperative to consider boundaries. Oftentimes, the lack of it in the initial stage of the professional relationship building comes in the way of progress. While sharing details of personal joys, successes or difficulties may at times yeild benefit because of the humane nature of the same, in the long run, it does more harm than good. Sharing too much information about someone's personal life leaves that person more vulnerable & could come in the way of their progress. However, setting boundaries should not be considered as a mean of hampering rapport building. While setting boundaries helps protect one's long term interests, rapport building is an integral part of professional growth.
