1 Be honest and fair

One of the biggest mistakes in peer evaluations is to be dishonest or unfair, either by inflating or deflating your ratings, giving vague or irrelevant comments, or letting your emotions or preferences influence your judgment. Being honest and fair means giving accurate and constructive feedback, based on observable behaviors and outcomes, not on personality or assumptions. It also means acknowledging your own strengths and weaknesses, and being open to receiving feedback from others.

Three major negative factors that can damage review integrity are conflict of interest (COI), failure to protect data, and reviewer bias. The first can be addressed by designing a well thought out software application for handling reviewer input and data. A sound review system will include initial and secondary checks for COI and include “fail safe” measures that prevent reviewer access to data once a COI has been identified. Using software that includes state-of-the-art data encryption/protection is essential. Proprietary systems (developed by the contractor, not off-the-shelf) add significant protection by making the programming code tougher for hackers to access.

2 Use clear criteria and standards

Another common mistake in peer evaluations is to use unclear or inconsistent criteria and standards, either by not following the guidelines or expectations set by the organization, or by applying different measures to different peers. Being respectful and professional means using a polite and positive tone, focusing on the behavior and not the person, and expressing appreciation and recognition for the work of others. It also means listening and responding to the feedback of others, showing interest and curiosity, and seeking clarification and improvement.

Write your review to the authors (not the editor). e.g. this - "*You* cannot test your research question with the current empirical design. For one, the relationship could be reversely causal" rather than this - "The research question that the authors proposed cannot be tested with the empirical design presented in the paper. For one, the relationship could be reversely causal" It's more effective for at least three reasons: 1. It reads as much more constructive. 2. It's easier to write (and understand). 3. It's easy to see that the authors are much more likely to accept the comment rather than having a negative (emotional) reaction to criticism.

4 Be timely and consistent

A fourth common mistake in peer evaluations is to be untimely or inconsistent, either by delaying or rushing your feedback, giving incomplete or contradictory feedback, or changing your feedback without explanation. Being timely and consistent means giving your feedback as soon as possible, while the performance is fresh and relevant, and allocating enough time and attention to complete your evaluation. It also means giving your feedback in a coherent and logical way, matching your ratings and comments, and explaining any changes or discrepancies.

A fifth common mistake in peer evaluations is to be unrealistic or unsupportive, either by setting too high or too low expectations, giving feedback that is not actionable or achievable, or failing to offer help or resources. Being realistic and supportive means giving feedback that is aligned with the goals and capabilities of your peers, that is specific and measurable, and that provides suggestions and solutions. It also means showing empathy and understanding for the challenges and opportunities of your peers, and offering assistance and encouragement.
