Someone I coached recently shared about an exchange with a senior direct report. She advised him to do something because her last employer did "X and Y." They pointed out this is not her last employer. A valid point for them, and a rapport-building, mindset-shifting opportunity for her.

Loss is a part of all change and we frequently focus our attention on all of the positive aspects of change and neglect naming and acknowledging things we are letting go of, might miss, might lose, etc. There is loss as we grow into new roles and have to let go of aspects of ourselves too in order to transform and develop our leadership.

Don’t come in as a change agent, no matter how much needs to be changed. Observe how things currently run, take notes, write down your ideas and, most importantly, build relationships. Listen to stakeholders. You don’t have to take their advice but ask questions and listen to learn. Once those relationships are sealed, changes can be implemented and you will be more likely to have people’s support.
