Something I have observed in my some of my early career coachees is a reticence to be themselves in a new workplace. Some believe that they must act in a certain way, exhibit certain behaviours, or conform to percieved norms that may not sit well with them. It can be a stressful and potentially intimitating time learning the culture and 'rules' of a new professional environment. Above all "be respectul" - to yourself as well as others. Take time to observe, listen, and be true to yourself. If you can not be yourself in a workplace, this can be a red flag. You don't have to compromise your values, but you may have to consider where you may be better appreciated for who you are.

6 Lack of emotional intelligence skills

A sixth common interpersonal skills mistake for new professionals is not having enough emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own and others' emotions. It helps you to cope with stress, handle emotions, and build relationships. However, many new professionals either lack emotional intelligence, or overestimate or underestimate it. They may also struggle to control their impulses, emotions, or reactions, and to empathize with others' feelings or situations. Lack of focus on networking. It is important to be visible to others and seek the support from others. Often we want to wait till we are more established, more tenured, or are afraid of wasting peoples' time. There is always something we bring to the table, and always something we can take away from a networking interaction.
