What are the most common conflicts between content and design teams?

In my experience, one of the perpetual battles between content and design teams revolves around the perceived priority and significance of their contributions. Content enthusiasts argue that the heart of user experience lies in the message and information, while design aficionados emphasize the aesthetics and functionality of the interface. This clash often leads to debates over space allocation, timing, and attention each element deserves, creating a tug-of-war between substance and style. Content and design teams must align their objectives to navigate this conflict successfully. Appreciating the value each brings to the table is crucial.

Content and Design teams should work in tandem. (Especially for a static asset) First there is a difference between art and design. Design is more functional, and content/copy is a part of design. On the other hand, art can be chaotic. Art need not convey a message, it’s perception based; whereas design has an obligation to communicate. It’s important to understand the objective behind an asset. Lesser the words, minimalistic the design, better the communication. Understanding the real estate of an asset is important. There should be a balance between the density of text and the number of design elements used. The design should help the onlooker focus on the key message of the asset. Content and Design are part of the same space.

Content first or design first? In my experience, the best results are when you balance both. Great content hooks and keeps readers around, but if the design is lacking, it can be hard to process. Equally, great design can capture attention but dull content won't make people stick around. Unless they're only there to get design inspiration. Where possible, try to write with both design and content in mind. Writers, work closely with your design colleagues (and vice versa) and you'll soon figure out each other's styles!

There are few ways this can be facilitated - 1) content and design are co-brainstormed and even better co-produced : absolutely not in silos 2) both content and design land on a mutual feedback process and land on a acceptable timeline & frequency of revisions, when necessary 3) setting a general guide on both design and content vibe 4) having a final say person for design , content and someone for both - basically 3 final go-aheads . Last but Crucial - user feedback and post mortem after a set timeline .

If you invite the Interaction Designer to a meeting, you should also be including their Content counterpart and vice versa. Start with an outline of the project and designate roles. Set regular scrum-style check-ins - what’s done, what’s next, and where are you stuck. Following every project have a debriefing meeting with everyone involved. Take that feedback and update the process for the next project.

This is something that I always do to prevent and arising conflicts between me and the designer. Whenever I prepare content that I want visualised, I prepare a rough sketch of what I imagined while writing the content. If it was something that I couldn't draw, I would search the Internet for a picture that is close to describing it while adding the changes I wanted. Every time I use this method, the designer gives me exactly what I was imagining and I gave them something to build on instead of having different ideas on the content.

Timetables or priorities can clash, but there should be no conflicts between content and design. We are in the same boat. The 'conflicts' tend to happen when people want the designs on short notice and/or fail to provide an accurate, clear description of what they want. People need time to do their job and they can't read minds. A little trust also goes a long way to avoid all kinds of negativity. A professional's idea can be different from yours, and sometimes it should be.
