What are the most common challenges when mentoring someone in fundraising?

As a mentor in fundraising, one of the most common challenges I encounter is nurturing the development of resilience and patience in my mentees. Fundraising is inherently a test of perseverance, often laden with rejection and uncertainty. I emphasize the importance of embracing these setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning, rather than discouragements. Another key challenge is instilling a sense of ethical responsibility and empathy. In fundraising, the pursuit of financial goals must be balanced with a deep understanding of and commitment to the cause at hand. It's essential to cultivate a character in mentees that values relationships and trust over short-term gains.

I've mentored many fundraisers, often early career. One common challenge I've seen has been lack of support for my mentee within the organization, or a misalignment between what the leadership of the organization want the mentorship to be versus what the individual may need i.e. skills, resources or tools.

From the mentee's standpoint, navigating time constraints can also be challenging. They may find it beneficial to communicate openly with their mentor about their availability, priorities, and any potential conflicts. Additionally, setting clear goals and expectations for the mentoring relationship can help both parties make the most of the limited time they have together. Regular check-ins on progress and adjusting objectives as needed can contribute to a more effective and focused mentoring experience.

It's important not to conflate "mentor" with "supervisor/boss/manager". A mentor serves as someone who can offer perspective and ideas due to their knowledge or experience without the tension or pressure of expectations the mentee delivers results. Motivations are totally different for a mentor vs. a supervisor. With all of the above scenarios (skill gap, lack of clarity, etc...) a mentor can ask questions and provide ideas for the mentee to consider on how to resolve the issues with their direct supervisor. But, it is not the mentor's responsibility to direct toward new outcomes. That being said, I would suggest a challenge for being a fundraising mentor is helping the mentee identify the priorities that are going to help them succeed.
