Finding a niche is secondary, just start writing. The more you write, the sooner your niche will naturally emerge. Writing across industries helps develop complementary skills that will come in handy in pretty much any niche.

There are so many free and paid options for online profiles where you can link to and share your writing samples. Be sure to include other attributes, such as a bio or "About Me" page that dives a little deeper into your interests and niche. Put a face to your name with a professional headshot, and be sure to include a contact form, email or phone number for potential work. A portfolio will also give you an opportunity to show what you want to do with your career, ultimately opening up wider opportunity for work.

When it comes to negotiations as a writer, you may find yourself in a situation where you have no leverage or all of the leverage. In a situation where you have no leverage and you want or need the deal, focus on putting together a high quality product. Down the road, you can use that as your proof that you deserve more. If you have all the leverage, decide what your number is and anchor with it. You do not need to explain your value to someone whose job it is to tell you that your work is not worth it. This is all within reason of course - if you give a preposterous number, you won’t get the deal. In an evenly matched negotiation, simply put, you need to be willing to walk away from the table - the deal needs YOUR approval to go forward.

Working in news is not the happiest occupation. There are going to be tragic days and horrific stories you have to sit with. Focusing on your mental well-being is an essential part of the job. As soon as I walk out of the station, I call my mom or a friend to catch up with them and take my mind off of my shift. Balance your life with good things: make time for activities that bring you peace and happiness. For me it’s cooking, going on walks, yoga, art and spending time with friends. Make sure you have an outlet. I personally recommend going to therapy just to help you get out all the negative energy that you absorb from the news cycle.

The experience of bringing forth a novel - with a long-term gestation, launching it into the world, then ensuring it not only survives but thrives is not unlike becoming a parent. Including, sadly, the lack of sleep due to the inherent and varied demands put on the author! Like parents, I find clearing the deck of all things that are more distracting or taxing rather than helpful in advancing your new priorities and goals must be back-burnered. It's time to erase from your calendar any external activities you instinctively feel are less important now. To allow others to pitch in more as they're able to support you, to keep your own expectations realistic. Get sleep when you can. Stay focused, be kind to yourself. You've undertaken a big job

To be creative in your writing it’s also sometimes necessary to do nothing in order to get ideas, or to spend time on unrelated tasks to find inspiration. Writing is art in the end - it doesn’t always work on demand.

Identify things that build your passion. We all are using the same fire to accomplish many different aspects of our life. Think of the things that bring you join and get you thinking - these can be completely separate from what your profession is. Writing is a creative pursuit, so do things that ignite creativity in a multidisciplinary way.

The thing I've found about being a writer, especially in the fast-paced (often remote) professional writing environment of today, is that it's easy to forget that writing is by its very nature a creative pursuit and, as such, requires a full cup from which to draw inspiration and that essential creative energy. Since writing is what I call an "invisible skill," it's easy to undervalue what you do and put productivity on a pedestal...but productivity without passion is a slow, difficult endeavor. The best advice I must give is be really clear about “WHY” you are writing… And here are some ideas to get you started: 1. Book sales - this is the natural “go to” especially for first time authors BUT is arguably the toughest & least predictable 2. Thought leadership - especially as a way to establish authority in your field of expertise or to share knowledge of your passion 3. Business marketing - increasingly common as a way to put your company out there 4. Consulting practice - somewhat different from marketing & more commonplace for “how to” categories 5. Personal fulfilment - not many think about this but is a big driver for some & (in combination with my passion for sharing) was my original starting point Hope these help

Promoting and networking online since AI is taking over the world has become more dangerous. Before, the best way to use social networks to promote your books was to make a video of yourself and your book, talking to your audience, and letting them know what your next book will be about etc. Podcasts were great at promoting yourself and your books. Since AI can copy everything about you, the way you talk, your voice, the way you move and look like, your signature, it will be possible for anyone to take over your identity even easier than it already has been. Or worse yet have terrorists use you through AI to promote their causes. You may end up in prison for something you never dreamed of doing.

The main one i see is authors thinking the book is about you. This is a common mistake. You are just the story teller and not the hero of the story.
