From my experience, SWOT analysis is based on qualitative assumptions. Whatever the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats might be faced by the decision makers, they should probably rely on other manners of risk assessing, and then can be more empowered by a combination of qualitative and quantitative information. SWOT analysis is excelent for preliminary brainstorming, where you can capture mainly strategic risks previous moving forward with other diligences. As next steps, for a more comprehensive risk assessment, there are other tools to be used.

When you dive deep into the risk assessment, it′s mandatory do elaborate a risk matrix. with that, you can have a clear picture of all the processes, inherent risks and due mitigating controls. To implement new products, or to change processes, or to buid or acquire a new system, the Company must have a detailed risk mapping, in order to evaluate potencial gaps and impacts, and how to deal within the next steps.

Very useful in scenario analysis, the Monte Carlo simulation model is, in my opinion, the most comprehensive and complex quantitative model. It′s possible to run an endless combination of probabilities, with different distribution (normal, log-normal, others) and different confidence levels, so you can have a good estimation of potential risks. It′s important to be careful, when using Monte Carlo, because if you are not sure about the premisses and very clear assumptions, the outcome will not be asertive at all.
