Once I understand the diversity of the data, such as unstructured, structured, or semi-structured, I'd want to gain insights into where and how the data is stored and processed next to ensure seamless integration with the metadata tool, by documenting all data storage locations i.e on-premises databases, cloud storage, data lakes and data handling processes ETL pipelines, data transformations.

So consider how tooling will scale our to support everyone in your organisation - from data and technical users to business and executive users. Knowing where data is and how to access and use it is critical. And metadata management tools that support all staff are the key to achieving democratisation of data.

The quality of metadata management tools at the top seems to be similar in terms of capabilities, functionality, support etc. The smaller players tend to be less developed or only cater to niche areas of metadata management, which needs to be taken into account when considering these tools.
