What are the main challenges and opportunities for AVs in urban planning and design?

What also needs to be considered is the question what part of the infrastructure really needs to be dedicated and which part can be shared. Dedciated lanes sound like an easy solution, however, this either means a significant cut-down of available lanes for "traditional traffic" or significant investment into new lanes (plus effect on land usage etc.). We need to focus on shared traffic concepts, meaning AVs and traditional vehicles need to be able to jointly use (most of) the infrastrucutre. This puts a higher requierement on the technology, but thats the only way to drive acceptance. Also I strongly opt for more AV-mass-transit solutions (AV busses/shuttles) as the initial step for bringing that technology into the market.

AV has the potential to revolutionize urban mobility by using these vehicles as a service to reduce ownership, lower cost, and cut traffic. Multi-modal transportation with bikes, and e-bikes can enhance the experience. To avoid widening social and economic disparities, AV tech must be made affordable. V2X infrastructure is critical to safety, efficiency, and interoperability in urban environments. Sharing open data can improve accuracy and reliability, while the Energy infrastructure can implement battery swapping can make AVs run 24/7, extend battery life, and reduce costs much more than the inefficient Fast Charging network. Successful integration of AVs requires collaboration between governments, private companies, and citizens.

Collaboration between stakeholders—government, industry, and communities—can address concerns like job displacement and equitable access to AV technology. Cities can be seen as hot spots of automation and digitisation. Hence you have to address the following questions: Which mobility offers or transport segments will benefit from automation? What‘s happening along your curbs? Which areas/districts will benefit? Which options towards re-use of (public) space could this generate? What will be the impacts of new offers on urban structures and functionalities? Important steps are: Determination of operating areas/zones. Integration of stakeholders and citizens. Integration in current mobility goals and in public transport (pricing, accessibility, multimodal-hubs, fleet management,..). New requirements for operational safety. Data monitoring for safety and operation + mobility issues.

Public Perception and Acceptance: Public acceptance is pivotal for the success of AVs in urban planning. Delving deeper, examine the psychological factors influencing acceptance, such as trust in technology, perceived safety, and the need for familiarity. Our modelling studies have shown that the ideal use of autonomous vehicles is as a form of shared public transport particularly for use in the first and last kilometre of travel. We modelled a large number of scenarios in the context of a case study for Melbourne, Australia, and found that we could end up with a nightmare scenario is these vehicles are used as pods with only one passenger inside. This will exacerbate emissions and congestion and would hinder our efforts to create sustainable transport solutions. When these vehicles are shared, particularly if they are operated on-demand, would provide travellers with good options particularly in outer suburbs where public transport services are not frequent.

We should be careful when talking about reducing land use with introducing AVs while simultaneously discussing whether we need dedicated AV infrastructure, again the answer is not an easy one! In addition to what the other contributors already said: we have also done a modelling on travel patterns in selected north american urban areas when introducing AVs on a broad scale, and we also saw a high probability of increased traffic density due to the fact that a lot of people how are not able to use individual mobility to that extent today (young people/ children, elderly people etc.) are now contributing to traffic. So after an initial drop due to increasing traffic efficiency, we could face an even bigger traffic density challenge than today

That links to my contribution regarding traffic density. Yes, AVs can make mobility more accessible to people who cannot participate right now (due to a multitude of reasons). We see an increase of vehicle miles traveled and total miles traveled when bringing AVs into the mobility equation.

EV battery swap is a better option as it extends battery life and provides instant fully charged batteries. AVs must be electric vehicles and use the first life of the battery for as long as possible. The second life of the batteries can be used for energy storage to stabilize the grid and harvest renewable energy, improving the environment and health of urban areas.
