Key thing to realise is that there are two different sorts of metric: - internal, focusing on the operational functioning of IT (like an taxi's engine: how much fuel do I have, how hot is the coolant, etc.) - external, focusing on the overall effectiveness of IT (like the taxi company: how does effective servicing improve the performance of the taxis, do electric taxis - despite the capital investment - deliver more profit) The management of IT requires both sorts of metric, but they are also both linked: taxis without fuel are not profitable; taxis not serviced will not function and therefore not be profitable. Once this has been achieved, measuring IT is quite simple. Senior engagement required, however!

Size of ticket backlogs does not need a huge amount of MUNG-ing, although understanding development team behaviour across multiple streams and identifying different themes requires a bit more tinkering...

Most people have different needs from IT, once past the End User Compute functions... and so will have different points of interest in what IT is doing for them. - There will be generic "things" the senior leadership will be interested in... - Different functions will be interested in different services delivered by IT... So ensuring communication happens where it needs to is the critical part - who wants to know what, and what is their influence and need from IT?
