What are the long-term effects of resource scarcity on your society?

Facing resource scarcity in my homemade tea business, I innovated by directly sourcing from sustainable local farmers to secure quality tea leaves. To reduce dependency, I diversified my products with locally available herbs and spices, creating unique blends that appealed to a broader market. Implementing a zero-waste policy, I repurposed tea waste for compost and developed eco-friendly by-products like tea-infused candles and soaps. Additionally, I invested in energy-efficient drying techniques and biodegradable packaging. These measures not only addressed resource scarcity but also built a sustainable, resilient business, transforming challenges into growth opportunities.

Pitfalls of human resource scarcity are burnout on your teams, churn, culture shifts (negative). In the technical and digital transformation space - a lack of technical skills can result in technical debt. It costs time and money to support old tools & systems and significantly increases the scope and cost associated with modernization efforts. The longer you wait to get rid of technical debt, the bigger the task (and data) becomes. It can be harder to adapt modern solutions on old frameworks. When you are stuck with technical debt, you become vulnerable. As technology progresses forward you fall behind further and further. The result of this can be decreased resources for monitoring, supporting and mitigating risk of aged systems/tools.

Increased Costs: Scarcity drives up the cost of resources, leading to higher prices for goods and services. Economic Inequality: Limited resources can exacerbate economic inequality, as the wealthy can afford higher prices while the poor struggle. Reduced Economic Growth: Persistent resource scarcity can stifle economic growth by limiting production capabilities and increasing costs for businesses.

There are two things and an inference that I would add to the discussion. Firstly, historically scarcity of resources has led to higher prices and inflation through the cost-push mechanism. Secondly, this scenario is almost certainly a long-term trend to emerge in the next decade. The difference in comparison to historical trends is that previous periods of wide-spread scarce resources have been short lived, typically 2-3 years associated with a peak in economic activity. However, the inevitable rise in the cost of carbon will place upward pressure on many resources for decades this time. Inflation is here to stay. The inference is that we will not necessarily get poorer, dependent on what you mean by wealth. Our values will change.

Resource scarcity occurs when demand for a natural resource is greater than the available supply – leading to a decline in the stock of available resources. This can lead to unsustainable growth and a rise in inequality as prices rise making the resource less affordable for those who are least well-off. The best solution is diversification and adaptability in that environment to survive and grow further.

Social Unrest: Scarcity can lead to social unrest as people compete for limited resources, potentially resulting in protests, strikes, or even conflict. Political Tensions: Resource scarcity can strain relations between countries, leading to geopolitical tensions and conflicts over access to essential resources like water, energy, and arable land.

There is no doubt inflation disproportionately affects the less wealthy. This threatens the advances in social equity and consciousness that developed. However, the difference with the long run inflation that I expect is that society values will change. This is because this long term inflation will affect all this time around. The thing about mitigating climate change is that affects everyone more equally than before. Therefore society values will change according so that there is more value or status attached to giving. This trend is already in place but at an early stage.

Resource scarcity in the energy industry drives companies to uncover materials and fuels in difficult to reach and environmentally risky places ie. fracking, mining the ocean floor, protected wildlife spaces, etc. The development of new replacement materials is expensive and slow. We must deploy as much existing clean energy today to buy time for scientists to develop breakthrough materials. Solar, wind, geothermal, grid upgrades, transmission, policy innovation. These are all tools available to us now and must be deployed quickly and with more private and public capital.

There is little choice but to retain eco-friendly practices this time. There is also an additional lever for resource allocation this time with the digital toolset available to make this more efficient than in previous cycles.

There is no better sector than to improve productivity, asset utilisation and reduce environmental damage than Transport. This is at a very early stage with electric vehicles not being a significant enough contributor to all of the above. Advanced digital transport allocation tools and autonomous vehicles do offer much promise in this regard, including a host of other benefits including improved safety and social connection.

Low NatGas prices and high supplies threaten shutting down 100s of 1000s of acres of production. Small factor electricity generation could take advantage of the oversupply and low prices. This could add stability to production of very necessary NatGas products. Without NatGas many products would be impossible or too expensive to make. Americans will find opportunities in the challenges of supply chain issues.

Innovation Pressure: While scarcity can spur innovation, it also poses significant challenges for developing sustainable technologies and alternative resources quickly enough to meet demand. Infrastructure Strain: Existing infrastructure may become inadequate, requiring significant investment to adapt to new resource realities.

Necessity drives innovation, leading to the development of new technologies for resource extraction, recycling, and alternative materials, which can mitigate some effects of scarcity. Necessity-driven innovation will drive technological advancements in the form of efficiency improvement, renewable energy technologies and sustainable practices.
