What are the latest trends and innovations in PDU technology and design?

In the context of data center power topology, data center PDUs reside inside a rack or cabinet and distribute power internally to compute, server, storage, or out-of-band / management equipment. These are not to be confused with the other type of PDUs (e.g. room, stand-alone, or 'end-of-row' PDUs), which are higher capacity and are used for a different type of power distribution generally at a larger scale such as a row, a 'POD' or a room.

Higher voltage PDUs provide greater efficiency. Coupled with high amperage ratings and components, these PDUs deliver the highest possible density available in the market. As a cautionary note, high voltage PDUs require the upstream power components to also deliver power at high voltage. Furthermore, high amperage PDUs may require specialized connectors. In some instances, hard-wiring the PDU may be needed, and only personnel with proper licenses (e.g. licensed electricians) may be able to install or remove the PDU.

One caveat with modular PDUs is that generally speaking, modular PDUs tend to lock in the data center users into their platform. Rarely are these compatible among vendors. Operationally, tracking PDU assets and maintenance may also increase with modular PDUs.
