Broadly speaking, irrespective of a small or large business, if a construction cost estimation software is able to take into account the critical part / construction methods / structures seperately in a different way as per user rather than applying general algorithms is the key feature for that software.

i think the best construction cost estimation is having a large construction data base including the productivity rates for labors and technician in all the construction scope , lesson learned from past projects , accurate numbers to be reflected in the cost estimation and to be well defined , then you can enter the data in any user-friendly interface .so you can track the progress with a clear vision .

It is to be start with Business requirement ie. Volume and industry and of course company expansion/ growth plan.. then its come to tool needs compatibility with other interfacing functions like accounting, supply chain management, warehouse management etc. Even its interface with Engineering may be think off. In my experience, having my cost estimate software on my mobile tablet gives me real-time access to run cost estimate and gather estimates on budget for repairs as I walk through my potential properties as I view them and create the estimates room by room, project by project. For me this has to be updated all the time according to the cost of the materials, because the cost continually changes the materials to give a more accurate estimate.
