There are two elements in the success of a distribution campaign in investment banking: name in the market & personal relationships. Some of the banks (i.e., bulge bracket) have been there for the long haul: whether they encounter quagmires, they always find a way to make things up for their loyal customers. Personal relationships are developed over the years by staying at the helm of these teams, particularly in the distribution (i.e., ECM, DCM, Syndicate) and complement an historical relationships between institution with a more personal touch. Finally, there are institutions that develop a particular influentce over one or more industry segments: should you need to trade in size, it may be advisable to check also such players.

In my experience distribution is a function of placing power, which in turn sits in the realm of a solid franchise and an attentive (often short) market making desk willing to providing liquidity and eager to trading. When these two factors are proficiently deployed there is not any material need for external intervention.

Most of the marketing strategy it articualted in periodic analyst call, distribution of reports and, in case of an offering, a Roadshow and the Analyst Presentation. First of all, it is your basic beauty contest: It is all about establishing the best risk-reward profile among your client's peers. You can achieve that using share performance, trading multiples, scenario analysis and simulation. It is a give and take game where an accomplished banker boast competitive advantages, while downplaying areas of weakness. What matters, though, is the risk-reward profile that you offer to the market, which - needless to say - has to offer a boost over existing securities.

In a specific situation, we were doing a non-deal roadshow (a periodic event to stay in contact with your shareholders), try to assess the best potential outcome among several strategic alternatives to seek growth. Similarly to an M&A negotiation, you are going to face each counterparty time and time again: clients change but the advisors are the same. Whether your customers may have a very strong positioning, you often have to leave something to others in order to be successful in the long run.

It depends which kind of player you are, If you cover a segment particularly well, than it could the organization of an industry conference every year: the number and quality of the managers in attendance will speak volumes about the consideration gained in the market. If you are strong in specific geographic market, it can be ranked in industry magazine. However, if you are a broker, your first predicament is to know the market well.
