What are the key factors in selecting algorithms for your prediction tasks?

The key is understanding the problem's nature. For classification tasks, algorithms like Random Forests or Gradient Boosting are often effective, while regression problems may benefit from Linear Regression or Neural Networks. My experience with anomaly detection in financial transactions led me to use Isolation Forests for their robustness in identifying outliers.

For large datasets, scalable algorithms like XGBoost or Spark MLlib are crucial. During a project on customer segmentation, I used k-means clustering on a massive dataset, leveraging Apache Spark for its distributed computing capabilities.

For larget datasets, algorhitms that dont take too much RAM and are applicable for GPU and TPU parallelization should be chosen. Also accuracy performance should be considered so that algorithms are well suited for dealing with large datasets.

My advice is to increase dimensionality for better accuracy performance and decrease dimensionality for less resource consumption, GPU, power, RAM etc. Remember that the feature space is generally the space in which the predictions can generally be made accurately (there are exceptions).

The complexity and number of features impact algorithm choice. With high-dimensional data, algorithms like PCA or Lasso Regression can reduce dimensionality and prevent overfitting. I applied PCA in a project to simplify customer attributes while retaining essential information.
