What are the key differences between data analysis and data science?

Data analysis in microbiome and biological research involves exploring and interpreting datasets generated from various biological samples, such as microbial communities, gene expression profiles, or clinical data. Descriptive analyses, statistical correlations and presenting data using heatmaps or dendograms are the basics. Data science goes beyond descriptive analysis to incorporate machine learning, predictive modeling, and bioinformatics. Integrating omics data to uncover molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes and disease phenotypes, and identifying novel biomarkers associated with disease risk, progression, or therapeutic response using machine learning and statistical approaches are characteristic.

Data Analysis is about answering the question of 'What has happened? or what is happening?' Data Science answers 'Why is it happening? And what is expected to happen?'

Data analysis: For example, an analyst might sift through spreadsheets and use Excel to find out why last month's marketing campaign flopped, because nothing screams fun like crunching numbers to confirm what we already suspect. Data science: Conversely, a data scientist might experiment with neural networks to predict customer behavior, embarking on a quest to unearth hidden insights and correlations, because who doesn't enjoy playing detective with algorithms?
